John on the road with Brand X in 1977
John Goodsall (1953-2021)
Guitar trailblazer, composer, leader, friend, father, John Goodsall, has passed away, and his family, and his colleagues are grieving. Fans are mourning a guitar hero, a great soul, and they will also mourn the two most notable bands Brand X, and The Fire Merchants, that he helped create.
As is often the case in life, and in music, families and loved ones need help raising the funds to meet the costs of funeral arrangements and settle outstanding bills.
John Goodsall was a founding member of the famous British jazz-fusion band Brand X, and a renowned session player all around Los Angeles since the 1980s, who was once heard on Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell", and Tony Basil's hit single "Mickey". He was the founder of the prog band "The Fire Merchants", along with many other great musical projects.
As a guitarist, he was openly revered by his peers for decades as a beautiful and melodic player, composer, and all around performer.
Whether you are a fan of his musical genius, a professional who admired and loved him, or simply a friend, you can be of great help in returning John to his family, and especially to Natasha, his daughter, so she can afford to give her dad the sendoff he deserves.
Help us spread this effort by donating, and by sharing all over social media, in America, in England, and anywhere else in the world where people knew his music.
Natasha will ultimately decide of the ceremony most fitting and she hopes to be able to conduct it soon, based on the monetary help this fundraiser will bring her.
More will be posted about the funeral arrangements when this fundraiser concludes.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Naomi & Natasha & friends
Here I am hanging out with my dad after his concert at the Rose in 2017, and with my besties.
- From Naomi:
I always thought of John as invincible like a cat with 9 lives full of life and vitality. His untimely death came as a great shock and on one of the many sleepless and tearful nights that ensued, these words came to me and I pass them on to you to find space for grief.
Grief-
Grief has no path but rather ebbs and flows like the tides of a vast ocean. I am powerless in its presence as it directs its will upon me. One can only submit to its demands when it seeks to flow out from your heart as large rivers of tears stream down my face. I can only follow its lead as it takes me through the shadows of the valley of death. Without borders or boundary I surrender to the pain as it is the only path forward to healing. It's searing burns through my breast like a burning flame then smolders like embers of memories past. We say Rest In Peace but it is I and you who need peace in this time of desolate solitude. So I send out my prayers to all who mourn and grieve as the heart breaks and please know it is a time in life of great aliveness. In there you will find your joy. Re live the beauty of a life passed. Stay in comfort knowing their mission has been accomplished and you were part of that path. Love and Light is upon them now and they shall shower it upon all they loved.
Please consider donating to Natasha's fund she created to help with her Dad's funeral and memorial expenses.
Thank you,
Naomi

Long lives the music, and the dignified memories:
John was irreplaceable within everyone of the creations he helped develop, be it The Fire Merchants, The Long Beach Mercenaries, or the numerous groups he played with.
John's former Brand X band mates have banded together here one last time in honor of John's wishes.
They join you in seeing him off with gentle grace, and heartfelt gratitude.
The time capsule closes on the mighty Brand X, but the spirit lives on in the hearts of true listeners. So it goes...
- A word to fans and friends from Percy and Robin, who, along with John, founded the band Brand X, and make up its heart and soul:
"I played music with John for almost 50 years on and off and I miss him. His family needs to raise some funds for his funeral. If you're able to help, please do so.
Here's to music genius and the big gig in the sky!"
Percy Jones
- Robin Lumley:
"Dear friends: I always enjoyed John's musicianship and appreciated his sense of musical balance. His playing was intriguingly melodic but never overstated.
Please lend a hand to help his family with this memorial fund. And thank you."
