Help Jordan & Family, Toxic Chemicals Destroyed Their Home!
Donation protected
I created this fundraiser for Jordan Sanders and her family. I have known Jordan for many years, first as a client and then a friend. I am very close with her whole family, and she is a wonderful person! Who would think having your basement floors epoxy coated by a company would result in your house and all of your belongings being destroyed? Could you imagine?
They haven’t been able to live in for nearly a year, and she’s still even had to pay the mortgage! Because of what happened and the nature of toxic chemicals, the home has to be gutted and remediated, and completely renovated. Unless she gets an insurance settlement- which looks like it is pretty unlikely at this point (both companies denied her claim, Viper Floor covering’s insurance company says they should have had additional “pollution insurance”.) Who would even know to ask a company if they have additional pollution insurance? Jordan even verified they were insured, but like most of us, was unaware to ask about that.
I was told the remediation process is almost the same as a meth lab, because it is toxic chemicals that have infiltrated everything!!! She is uncertain if she will even be financially able to have it gutted, remediated, and completely remodeled, or if she has to cut her losses and try to sell to hopefully break even. She worked SO hard to get this home, it was her DREAM home, and I remember the joy and excitement when she got it! This is truly so heartbreaking…
Here is her story in her own words. Please consider contributing if you want and are able to, any amount helps, and please share!
”Aaron and I have never posted anything like this before, but we are in desperate need of help from our friends, families, and anyone who might have information that may help us. We are both very prideful and private people and did not want this to go public, but we are being backed into a corner and running out of options.
On December 12th, 2023 we had Viper Concrete Coatings And Polishing come to our home and seal our cement basement floor. To make a long story short - the work done was not only terrible but whatever products they used created continuous toxic fumes filled with carcinogens - that are still currently permeating everything in our entire 3 story home. That means we had to walk away from everything in our house without notice, and have not slept a single night there since then - 317 nights to be exact.
My grandma Cathy has been so gracious and immediately invited Aaron, myself, and our two boys to stay in her basement while we try to figure this out. While we have been so grateful for the roof over our heads we still had to rebuy everything for not only ourselves; but our children, including furniture, mattresses, clothing, toys, etc., AND pay our mortgage on a house we are not even living in.
We had two different air quality assessments done with documents to prove the levels of carcinogens and other toxic fumes, and we also have quotes for what some of the remediation will entail. Since the fumes have permeated everything in the home - for us to move back in safely while thinking about the long-term health effects, most of the contents if not all, will have to be gutted and/or replaced, including drywall, flooring, appliances, furniture, etc. We have many quotes completed by different trades, and as you can imagine the total price of properly remediating our home is extremely pricey - actually more than we owe on the house.
We filed a claim with our insurance (USAA), and unfortunately, they cannot help. We also filed the claim with Vipers Insurance (Hastings Insurance Company) and they denied the claim without an appropriate explanation. In February, we hired an attorney and filed suit against Norman DeDecker and his company Viper, and throughout the last several months had no success or positive steps forward due to Norman evading service, attorneys dragging their feet, etc.
I personally wrote, titled, and addressed 20 letters to every board member and officer of Hastings Insurance Company and mailed them out about three weeks ago. We want to make sure they are aware of the situation. These letters told our story and contained air quality results and remediation guidelines. Since then I have received only one response from their Chief Legal Officer, stating that they are unable to comment and any future correspondence will need to go through my attorney.
In the last week I have contacted Senator Gary Peters and Senator Debbie Stabenow. I have also contacted State Representative Phil Green of District 67 - and he was very responsive and sent over my letter to the Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS), which started a complaint and they directed me to file a complaint against Viper to LARA as well. Everything is coming to a head, and we need to take action now.
I am not making this post for any pity; and not even to place blame on anyone. I am just posting to get the facts out into the community in hopes of bringing awareness to our situation and uncovering any resources that we have not already thought to reach out to. Please share, and tag anyone you think may be able to help and hopefully, get us to a resolution that will make myself and my family whole again.”
