Help Jory Nash make his 10th studio recording

Hi! My name is Jory Nash; I'm a 5-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, a Penguin Eggs Magazine Album of the Year recipient, and a past winner of the Folk Music Ontario Songs From The Heart award. I've recorded 9 studio albums since 1997, but nothing since 2018. And I need your help in order to make Album Number 10.
In 2019 I took a break from music. Years of declining revenue, fewer bookings and more hastened my hiatus. I was burnt out and depressed from the collapse of my once thriving career. Also, my partner and I had a toddler to take care of and my attention needed to be at home. Then COVID hit, and then my partner Britt was diagnosed with multiple cancers in 2021. During her chemo the basement unit in the house we were renting caught fire. We relocated from Toronto to Cobourg to focus on her recovery and to start fresh. The idea of making music again was something I rarely toyed with and other priorities continued to take precedent. Fast forward a bit and Britt is now in remission and our son is in Grade 1.
In 2023 I did a few shows, quietly, including a house concert in my new home town of Cobourg. I even wrote a new song for it, my first since 2017. The concert was so enjoyable to play and the response so positive that I began seriously to consider the idea of getting back into music, and with the support of my family I've finally made the decision to do so. The best way to reintroduce myself to my fans and to the music community is via live shows…and a new recording.
The only problem is that I simply don't have the money to make a record, and the granting system is lengthy and success is entirely uncertain. The ONLY way to make a record now is to ask for the help of my friends, fans and more. That's where this campaign comes in.
For this project, my 10th studio recording, I want to make a relatively stripped down, mostly acoustic guitar-focused record, with some basic accompaniment and harmony vocals. But I want it to sound as good as my other albums do. The last 3 albums I made were done with award-winning engineer and co-producer CHRIS STRINGER (and all were nominated for Best Production at the Canadian Folk Music Awards), and the last one was recorded at the amazing UNION SOUND COMPANY (https://www.unionsoundcompany.com/). If I can raise the necessary money I will make this record with Chris and record it at Union Sound.
I'm already partway through the writing of the new material, and I'm tremendously excited by what I'm creating. I'm again booking concerts, some of them contingent on having this new recording in hand. I've got early commitments from some key musicians and from Chris and his studio. I can make this record for $15,000, roughly half the budget of my previous recordings, with your help. Here's where the money would go:
Recording Studio: $3,000
Engineers/Co-Producer/Mixing: $3,000
Mastering: $1000
Musicians: $3000
Vocalists: $1000
Photography & Design/Layout: $1000
CD liner notes printing and CD manufacturing (small run pressing): $1500
Misc. costs: $500
HST where applicable: $1000
All promotional costs (publicity, radio promotion, etc.) for the album on conclusion will be my financial responsibility.
In the past I've done crowdfunding campaigns where I set different levels of perks and people chose their level of reward. But for this one I am simply asking for people to help me make this project happen, and to contribute what they can to help me. It’s really the only this project can get off the ground.
If you have ANY questions, or would prefer to make a direct, off-line contribution please contact me directly: jorynash at bell dot net
Also, I have my website www.jorynash.com back up and running. My plan is to finish writing all the songs for the album by early/mid Summer and I will begin recording in the Fall, with a March/April 2025 target for release.
