Dear Reader,

While the following story was originally written in May 2023, I am excited to share it with you because it continues to embody the core purpose of this crowdfunding campaign. While I have not actively raised funds in over a year, the impact I strive to create remains as relevant and important as ever.

Through this story, I hope you gain a deeper understanding of the challenges I'm passionate about addressing and the positive change I aim to achieve.

I encourage you to continue reading and consider how you can contribute to making my vision a reality.

Thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,

Deonté Phydarius Welton

RIVER FURNACE MAGAZINE—As one of few DIY trans-run presses to survive an intense backlash to trans life recently taking center stage in the liberal mind, River Furnace has championed the stories of transgender women of color for the last three years. This Mother’s Day, we're spotlighting someone who has become a trailblazer in her own right: a black transgender woman who has become a force for change in her community, Miss Deonté Phydarius Welton.

Many of our readers will be familiar with her story. As a columnist, digital creative director, and spiritual influencer, Deonté has been a beacon of light at the intersection of the LGBTQIA+ and non-traditional African American religious communities. Her candor, sass, and stories have made her an important voice in the non-academic landscape. She has graced the pages of River Furnace countless times, last year she raised $20,000 to support her work, and she managed Qohotel from her home which served as a shelter, art house, and free bed and breakfast for transgender women in need. The house supported and showcased independent transgender women in music and the arts. But behind the glamour and success, she has faced her fair share of challenges.

As a black transgender woman, she has had to navigate a world that can be hostile to those who are different. She has faced discrimination, rejection, and even violence. But she has refused to be silenced or diminished. Instead, she has used her platform to speak out on behalf of others, to fight for greater acceptance and equality, and to challenge the status quo.

Now, we're asking our readers to help support her work. First and foremost money will cover vacation travel expenses and hotel accommodations. The money raised will also cover rent, utility bills, clothes, shoes, and other household expenses. Additionally, we hope to raise enough money to cover her medical and work expenses. We believe that her voice is more important than ever and that her message of hope and resilience needs to be heard. By donating to sponsor her, you can help ensure that she can continue to make a difference in the world and that her voice will continue to be heard loud and clear.

Deonté has broken down barriers and made history. With the help of our readers, she can continue to do the work that she loves and make a difference in the world. Whether you can give a little or a lot, every donation counts. Together, we can help create a world that is more accepting, more inclusive, and more just. Thank you for your support.
