Justin and Ashley were surprised to receive some heavy news regarding their pregnancy.
On January 20th, Justin and Ashley received news that the twins Ashley is carrying had developed Stage 1 TTTS (Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome) and Stage 3 SIUGR (selective intrauterine growth restriction). For those who are unaware, Twin to twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a disease of the placenta (or afterbirth) that affects identical twin pregnancies. TTTS affects identical twins (or higher multiple gestations), who share a common monochorionic placenta. The shared placenta contains abnormal blood vessels, which connect the umbilical cords and circulations of the twins.
This means that Baby A was growing faster than Baby B, with Baby B being further behind in development.
January 25th: “Hey guys, today was very hard. We have stage 3 sIUGR and stage 1 TTTS. Unfortunately due to the twins having cords so close together the outcome is not ideal. We will have surgery that will allow only Twin A to survive. This decision was made with as much data as possible and the understanding that if we do not take action both twins will not make it. I wish I had better news to share. Unfortunately we’re not out of the woods, we have 30% chance of losing both during surgery due to how close their cords have grown together. We really need as many prayers as you can muster, this season is the hardest yet but we’re thankful for our baby girl Ro, our support system, our church, everyone who’s prayed for us and mostly God. I don’t see his plan but I’m going to trust it.”
January 26th: “Update, we had surgery and Twin A made it through the surgery. Twin B - Brynleigh May did not make it. We’re not it the clear yet, we will have an ultrasound to determine if our surviving baby has made it past the hardest part. For the next month we will be monitored closely for any changes but after that month this pregnancy goes to a normal risk pregnancy. We get to come home Sunday and I’m praying for peace. We’ve made the hardest decisions I can imagine in the hopes of the best outcome that Twin A will live a healthy life. Thank you for all the support.”
January 28th: ”Hey everyone, baby A is doing well! We have some complications from the surgery, the membrane separated. We’re at a 20% risk of losing the baby within the next 3 weeks. I’m now on bedrest for the next 3 weeks and likely this will continue for the entirety of this pregnancy. Please send prayers for the following:
- Prayers this baby waits to make a grand appearance.
- We need the membrane to stay intact and not rupture at least until we get to 24 weeks, we’re currently 18weeks.
- Peace for the rest of this pregnancy, I can’t pick up my daughter, clean, cook, drive, really anything for the remainder of my pregnancy. If you don’t know this about me already, I’m not really one to ‘chill’.
January 29th: Justin: “Friends— I could never in my life have imagined going through the situation we are in. We were diagnosed with Stage 2 TTTS and Stage 2/3 iUGR and had to have an emergency surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on short term notice. To our dismay, we lost baby B (Brynleigh May Leonard) during surgery, along with that, now the membrane has been disconnected from the placenta and we are at risk of losing baby A (Arwyn Leonard). We are scared and devastated and looking for hopes, prayers, and any help you feel led to give. Every amount helps and we would appreciate if this could get shared! ❤️“
With this rapid developing diagnosis and fast decision making, Justin and Ashley have had to make some of the hardest decisions regarding their family, health, and babies. The expensive surgery, travel, and stay, have accrued a massive expense for their family, with very little to no coverage by insurance. I am hoping that with this GoFundMe, we can somehow bless and help them.
