PLEASE HAVE A READ OF MY STORY BELOW! ANY FINANCIAL HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! I HAVE HIT WHAT SURE FEELS LIKE ROCK BOTTOM!
Hello all. My name is Justin Aloneftis, I am 36 years old and was born and raised in South Florida. On April 10, 2018 I decided to go to the beach in Jensen with a new girl I was dating. You know how they always say life can change in the blink of an eye...? Well, its true, very true.
We were at the beach, and like many others have done decided that I wanted to get wet...I ran out towards the waves and dove in...Success, did that 9 more times. Ah hell, why not a 10th time for good measure?! So, I sprinted out towards a large wave crashing on the shoreline as fast as I could. When I dove into the wave as fast as possible I suddenly felt like I went head first into a brick wall...Of sand...I am not quite sure how I managed to run into a wall of sand but immediately afterwards I found myself fully conscious yet completely paralyzed from the neck down. I floated around and got tossed around in waves crashing and ended up face down unable to move, starting to say my goodbyes to the world. Meanwhile the girl I was with ran out into the water because she saw me floating face down. She yanked my head out of the water and said “Are you OK?!” No! I’m not! She dragged me back through the shoreline through the rough waves and got me back to dry land. I still could not move at all and laid there staring at the sky waiting for help to arrive. I was carried by 6 medics to the ambulance about 150 meters from where we were stuck. I was then transported to the Marriott Hotel in Jensen Beach where I was met by a trauma hawk to Lawnwood Regional in Ft. Pierce. I underwent what felt like a 1000 different tests to get to the diagnosis...C5, C6, & C7 were busted. The surgeon decided to do a Procedure that called for 2 rods and 8 screws to be placed in the back of my neck. I underwent anesthesia and had the surgery done. When I woke up I found myself laying in the ICU still unable to move a finger at this point not knowing whether or not I would be a quadriplegic for life or if I would begin to be able to recover from this horrible accident. After 10 days I was transferred to the step down unit and then to the rehab facility where I would have to relearn how to walk, eat, take a shower, go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, everything...all of these little things I know we are all guilty of taking for granted when all is well...Eventually I slowly started to get a few things back. During the recovery it became very apparent that something was very wrong. My beck was leaning to the right, and did not look right at all. It turns out that the first surgery actually failed and my neck was not stable enough to support the weight of my head and I developed 60 degree kyphosis with my vertebrae now compressing my already delicate spinal cord. I went to UM where the surgeon told me that it was imperative to undergo a 2nd brutal corrective surgery. So after suffering miserably in a neck brace for 3 months and undergoing agonizing physical therapy it turned out I would have to do all again a second time, with another 3 months in the Miami J neck brace! Surgery day came, I once again underwent anesthesia and to town the surgeon went...FOR 12 HOURS! I woke up feeling like I came out of a year long coma. The doctor was able to correct the issues with the vertebrae but turns out I would suffer most likely permanent nerve damage to the spinal cord. The nerves that got damaged make it so my shoulder blade does not stay where it is supposed to because the muscles are not firing properly. This causes a huge problem because your range of motion is very limited and the strength is just not there in the arm, as well as a constant burning/freezing feeling running down my entire arm into my hands where it feels like someone is constantly pulling the tendons in my hands. This pain is constant 24/7 and is something that has to be dealt with through every waking moment of my existence. Again, I am very blessed to have been given back the ability to walk, I am just expressing my frustrations from the pain. It is very debilitating and makes it very difficult to accomplish once very easy tasks through out any given day. Since the date of the accident I have spent much of my time bedridden due to the fatigue and mental drain of just feeling like downright shit every day. I have tried just about everything you could think of to try and alleviate the pain both naturally and chemically. Still, nothing seems to be able to get rid of the pain long enough to not have a thought about how badly the pain is feeling. I was in and out of the emergency room 4 times. One of the times was from getting a trigger point injection and ending up getting a punctured lung from the needle! That put me in the hospital for 5 days...
