Help Kaleia and Jem Build Stability in New Home

Donation protected
Dear community,

I’m writing on behalf of my beloved friend and housemate Kaleia and myself to ask for your support as we continue to settle into our new living situation and recover from a substantially challenging year. This is our second gfm this year made in an effort to help us stay at our home after escaping eviction and abusive dynamics at our previous place. I will link the previous gfm here for more context of who we are and where we were at earlier this year: Help Kaleia and Jem Secure Housing

Like many folks, I lost my job in 2020—and subsequently lost my health insurance and income. I then began struggling with my breathing and mobility after fire season brought hazardous air in September 2020. After many trial and error treatments done remotely as COVID-19 precaution, I eventually was hospitalized in March 2021. At that time it was discovered that I had a pulmonary embolism, which had dramatically impacted my ability to breathe and move around freely. It wasn’t until some months later, after some more hospitalization and treatment, that I found out I was down to using only 15% of my lung capacity—and I needed a PTE surgery in San Diego to stay alive.

In the midst of this challenging time, abusive estranged family dynamics surfaced (doxxing, harassment, amongst other troubling information), eviction notices were sent, and housing scams took portions of our limited funds. Our first gfm helped us raised enough money to help us pay for movers, to apply and pay for a new home to escape eviction and distance ourselves from abusive family. Unfortunately, previous funds also had to be used to pay for the lodging and travel for my surgery which have not been yet been reimbursed. EDD barely helped cover my disability during my immediate recovery and did not renew me for unemployment because I did not work in this last year.

In this time, Kaleia has been a support to me when she can, while navigating many traumatic personal losses from lockdown to present day. She has been without health insurance and access to mental health resources while in deep grief and yet has physically supported me as a disabled roommate facing down death.

Fortunately, Kaleia and I have both found work and are looking to a future where we will have access to resources for our mental health. We are so grateful to have received financial support so we could travel to get my surgery, move away from a dangerous living situation, and pay for some months rent. At the same time, we have been without a steady income and without mental health resources that we have been needing.

We are hoping to raise enough money to cover current and past rent due in our new home, outstanding bills, some medical debt, and food. We aim to be able to pay our debts off by the end of November so we can build upon a more stable situation in our new home and me in my recovering body. We are grateful for anything anyone can spare. Thank you for reading and thank you for any support you can offer!
