Help Kami Get the Medical Care She Deserves!!
If you know Kamala Brown-Sparks, you are well-aware of the strength this woman has shown to make it to 2020. From a wheelchair to walking; From misdiagnosis to misdiagnosis; To dealing with racism and ableism, Kami has persevered when many would have crumbled.
For years, Kami thought she had MS. The doctors treated her MS with incredibly expensive medications that didn't always help.
The reason they didn't help? Kami doesn't have MS.
No.
She doesn't.
Kami has Devic's Syndrome, also called neuromyelitis optica or NMO. It is an inflammatory immunological disorder, that mimics severe MS symptoms.
The condition is extremely rare, affecting between 0.052 and 0.44 in every 100,000 people worldwide. The cause is unknown, and there is no cure. Treatment aims to prevent relapses and control symptoms.
Unfortunately, there are no doctors in Indiana who specialize in the treatment of this rare disease. So Kami is moving to Newburyport, Mass, near Harvard, which has a clinic dedicated to the treatment she needs.
Not only will she have access to the care she needs, she will live near others, who deal with Devic's Syndrome as well, giving her a community to be a part of, and creating a support network she need so badly.
As we all know, moving is expensive. But it is important that Kami get the ongoing treatment and support she needs to live the full life she deserves!
Can you help? Any donation, no matter how small, adds up and will help Kami get to Harvard!
Thank you!
