Help Karina & Ilia: serious accident recovery!

Hi, my name is Natalia, I am a friend and colleague of Karina. On August 22, 2023 Karina and her husband Ilia got into a terrible car accident in Mexico. They are not at fault, but they received injuries which almost cost them their lives.

Karina is one of the founders of Health & Help, a humanitarian aid organization that provides basic medical care for people living in the rural regions of Guatemala and Nicaragua. Ilia, Karina’s husband, is a documentary filmmaker, one of his latest documentaries is about immigration crisis in Central America.

The guys were on their way to the waterfalls and stopped on the side of the road in San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico, to look at the map when a fully laden truck, which had failed brakes, drove into them and other cars nearby. There were a total of 9 injured in the accident, one person was killed.

Now Ilia and Karina are in the hospital, both in serious, but stable condition. Ilia has a complex comminuted skull fracture, the right side of his body is paralyzed. Karina has a skull fracture, a neck injury and multiple limb injuries. The guys are now in the hospital in San Cristobal (Mexico), they both were transferred to this hospital because their conditions are very serious.

Money is very much needed: for medical treatment (meds, hospital stay, possible surgeries, etc), for travel of their relatives so they can be with Karina and Ilia, for recovery, for life and for long rehabilitation.

Karina and Ilia always answered calls for help, now they need your help to recover from this terrible accident.
