On January 30th at Snowbird, Karina experienced a horrific and unexpected accident. Karina was on Chip's Run which has been the constant favorite over the years. As Karina was in control going down the mountain, she landed from an icy roller, instantly caught an edge, and became unconscious. Quick to the scene was a friend who discovered she was unresponsive, her eyes crossed and face bloody. He immediately knew her situation was serious and called ski patrol where they raced to the scene to move her from the blind spot of passing skiers/snowboarders. Ski patrol instantly knew Karina needed to be life-flighted to the University of Utah and tobogganed her to a place called the Amphitheater. The helicopter safely picked her up as she laid unconscious on the way to the hospital. A few of her items were later discovered 10 yards from where she crashed.
Karina was at the hospital in the Ortho, Trauma and Surgery unit for two days. Between scans, tests, and memory loss, she is on the journey of healing. Luckily all the scans came back negative. She did fracture her orbital socket, broke the blood vessels in her eye, has vision impairment, is suffering from a concussion and experiencing constant migraines. All of her snowboarding gear was cut and destroyed by hospital staff.
Karina is hoping to return to work soon, but the Dr. has insisted she waits or limits her work hours immensely. This Go Fund Me is to help Karina with medical expenses so she can heal without having the stress of bills and work restrictions.
Karina has been beyond tough and brave during this experience and has appreciated all the support she has received from the community.
