Help Karla Beat MDS - AML Leukemia

Thank you for visiting this page. It’s dedicated to Karla Mejia (42). She is a wife to her wonderful husband, Jose, and a mother to four beautiful kids Mariela(25), Alexa (18) Candy (16), and David (8).

As many of you know, my mother, Karla was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma (Brain Cancer) in April 2021. She fought through Brain surgery, radiation, and Chemo. We had a great outcome, and her brain scans have been clear ever since!

Unfortunately, due to the chemo received, she was recently diagnosed with MDS/ Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Her doctor informed us that it is an aggressive cancer and treatment needed to start sooner rather than later. Although her medical plan is chemo, the ultimate goal is a Stem Cell transplant. Without a transplant, the chemo alone will not work.

Due to my mom’s immigration status, she does not have insurance. We have been extremely blessed with obtaining resources through Yale, the Chemo manufacturers, etc. but recently we’ve hit a bump in the road.

In order for her to get referred to the Transplant team and start the process of looking for a donor she must have Insurance. Many insurance companies require immigration status to purchase private/state insurance.

It’s hard to anticipate what you might need when a difficult journey like this is placed before you. I’ve created this page for my mother to not only assist with paying for her medical expenses like a monthly insurance plan, medications, etc. but to hopefully come across someone who can lead me in the right direction.
