Karla is the type of woman that is loved by all of us that are lucky enough to know her. Recently, we've asked ourselves, "Why Karla?" Karla and Clay have faced and overcome so much in the past few years – nobody deserves all of the struggles that life has thrown their way. They will overcome this as well, but this journey is just beginning. Her health problems in the last few years have created severe financial difficulties, which is why we created this fund for them. Here is her story:
Karla and her husband Clay spent years trying to have children and were finally blessed with twins in 2013. She developed severe preeclampsia during her pregnancy and had to deliver the twins prematurely. The pregnancy and delivery took a toll on her and she almost did not survive.
2015 brought the first cancer diagnosis: triple negative breast cancer. After a lumpectomy, double round of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, she was in remission.
In December of 2016, Karla suffered a traumatic eye injury that left her without sight in one eye and a possible need for a cornea transplant in the future. While recovering from her eye injury, she was admitted to the hospital for a compressed lung due to fluid buildup. The fluid was tested and the diagnosis was grim - Stage 4 lung cancer - the breast cancer had metastasized to her lung.
Karla is a graphic designer and has been unable to work more than a few hours per day due to her eye injury, and both she and her husband have exhausted their vacation and sick time. The pair are struggling to balance the twin's needs, Karla's treatments, and the deluge of incoming medical bills. They need the love and support of others now more than ever.
