Help Kas land on her feet after incarceration!

Hi! I'm Amalia, one of Kas's friends.

Kas (she/he) is coming home in August 2024, just under a year from now. But she need your help to land on her feet - they have no financial safety net or financial support on the outside. Without help, he faces homelessness. He'll need assistance with rent, transportation, food, and other essential utilities for the first several months after their release from prison. Please consider helping Kas with her basic living expenses, which will ensure she is able to enjoy their release, heal from the trauma of incarceration, and set herself up for the future.

I first met Kas through a card-writing action by Survived and Punished NY, a grassroots organization that supports criminalized survivors of sexual violence. I didn't expect a response back - but Kas sent me a beautiful letter in response, in her signature curlicued handwriting. I had included a brief poem by Mary Oliver in my card, and he responded with gratitude, sharing that he is a poet himself - which would soon become obvious, from his lyrical writing style and thoughtful approach to life.

Since then, we've developed a friendship. Kas has supported me while I struggled with mental health, even as he dealt with their own challenges. Every letter we exchange is filled with comfort, kindness, and details about Kas's grand vision for the future. She's writing a series of novels. She makes art. She's designing a swimwear and lingerie line. He's ambitious and hard-working, often handwriting hundreds of pages in a matter of weeks. And despite how unforgiving prison can be, they always try to maintain a sense of wonder and hope. He tells me he's working on self-compassion and forgiveness, on becoming the best version of themselves. He raised money so they could provide their daughter with a fun trip for her birthday.
