Help kate breathe through both nostrils again!

Eeek, here goes...

 

SHORT STORY

Earlier this year, i noticed it was hard to get a full inhale through my nose. i went to an ENT (Ear, Nose, & Throat) doctor, who put a camera up my nose and showed me why i could not breathe... the internal structure had collapsed. To breathe through my left nostril again, they need to remove my nose down to the bone, and put it back on using cartilage from my rib. (yes, for real!) Insurance covers some of it, but over $16k will be out-of-pocket and payment is due prior to surgery on December 6. 

 

LONGER STORY

i was born with a cleft lip and palate and have had 7 related surgeries, with the most recent being over 20 years ago. Apparently that last surgery was not done well, and my current surgeon needs to rebuild from scratch the septum (i.e., middle wall between your nostrils) and the other fleshy parts. He cannot use the existing nasal cartilage as he normally would because it's all stubborn scar tissue. So he needs to graft cartilage from my rib. 

 

Some of the out-of-pocket cost is related to this extra effort. The rest is allocated to the portion of the surgery being labeled "cosmetic." Turns out, insurance covers functional repair of the airway, but not the reformation and shaping of the new nose. We can take your nose off, but to put it back on with any attention to detail, it's gonna cost you. After a lifelong journey of coming to love my unique face, i'm about to buy a fancy nose i didn't ask for, so that i can breathe. The universe works in mysterious yet wise ways, and my learning continues to expand. (Still, i won't pretend i'm not really scared.)
