Help Kate Finish the Wall in 2020! (North Creek Mosaic Project)
The North Creek Mosaic Project is becoming the largest community artwork in our Adirondack region. It has touched the lives of thousands and connects them to our community in a creative, tangible and meaningful way… a “treasure” for generations to come!
And we need your help to finish our fourth and final panel!
My name is Kate Hartley, and I’m so proud to introduce you to the North Creek Mosaic Project! Our mural is a scene of an ideal spring day in the Adirondacks, where adventurous boaters are on the river, and skiers and snowboarders still ride the mountain. These April days are magical, and filled with wildlife, too… and yes, we’ve exaggerated just a bit by having green trees and flowers. As the lead artist, I can tell you that this is the very coolest art project ever– and so much more than I ever dreamed possible! The energy that fills the mural comes from the hundreds of children, teens and adults who have each dedicated an hour or more to creating and installing “their part,” with guidance from myself and my experienced volunteers. After the details are installed, I “weave” background swirls of tile and glass to complete the elaborate scene. I love being greeted by families who come to visit their wave, or turtle, or rock in our artwork! Sometimes, I can even talk them into adding something else. “This is not your average public art piece.” Built on a 40-year-old retaining wall, this project will beautify our community for hundreds, or even thousands of years!
This project means so much to so many people! A local kids’ program volunteered this past summer, and one little girl squished her tile “grasses” on the wall with a flourish, looked at her camp counselor and declared “I’m a part of HISTORY!” This is the feeling shared by each person who even just sticks one tile, or visits us as we’re working. I am a teacher as much as I am an artist, and this project has allowed the two aspects to come together in such an inspiring and beautiful way. I invite camps, clubs, school groups and adult groups as well, to come and create with me. I even go to them, tiles and all, and create pieces that can be installed later. Last year’s second graders made a family of almost-life-sized deer from donated floor tiles they had nipped and glued onto fiberglass mesh. Then, they took a field trip to the wall to install them, with snacks donated by local eateries. One visitor to the wall declared “What a spectacular project… pulls people together for those creating it and those getting to enjoy it! So great especially at a time when we need some unity.”
WOW - All these people connecting to our community and nature through ART!
My vision is to encourage everyone to become part of the North Creek Mosaic Project! I’ve been creating this mural for 9 years now, with the help of over 1700 people of all ages – all the kids in town from second grade on up, and lots of folks who were just wandering through our 6-block-long Main Street. I thought that I’d be finished in 3 years… but a snapped ligament in my wrist let me know that I was pushing too hard. Mosaicking is a LOT of physical work. Not just “nipping” tile, but hauling water and wheelbarrows of tile colors to the work area each day. We have tons of tile, stone and glass (even melted bottles!) stored in a shed nearby. I am determined and dedicated to finishing this HUGE mural (over 180 feet long) in 2020!
YOUR DONATION will help us to finish the wall! We’re working on the fourth and final panel now, creating details that we’ll add in the spring, then comes the background work throughout the summer… to hold a “Last Piece Party” and dedication in September/October, 2020. Our annual budget is about $15,000. Through the years, we have raised this through foundation grants, and fundraisers like selling t-shirts, cards and NCMP “Wildlife Guides.” Many grants only fund a few years’ of any one project, however.
Recently, a generous couple offered to match, dollar for dollar, every donation up to $5000. Can you please help us meet this wonderful challenge by May 31?! Even if you can’t donate, please share the message and help us spread the word!
