In April 2015, Kathy Boggs was diagnosed with Stage 4 Gastric Cancer. She was given 6 months to live. Today, she is a survivor (a doctor's miracle). The dreaded chemo began May 2015 until February 2017, she continued to fight with regular regiments of chemo. She would suffer devastating effects each week after the treatment. The sickness from chemo would wear her down, but she never gave up. She had to quit her job during this period because the chemo wore her body down. In February 2017, she was told she was in remission. Words that sounded so good. This period only lasted until August 2017 and the cancer returned. This time, she required several surgeries to remove some of the tumerous fibers. The cost was building but insurance was being used. However, in March 2018, Kathy was told that John B. Amos Cancer Center was no longer accepting her health insurance effective January 1, 2018. This meant that 3 months of the treatments were her responsibility. As most of you know, chemo is not an expense that fits into your monthly budget. The cost was enormous and she couldn't continue until she found some insurance that would cover the costs. Therefore, she had to stop her chemo treatments and she began insurance shopping. Well, the cancer did not stop spreading. In June 2018, she found insurance and began the fight again. However, she can't get a supplemental insurance until January 1, 2019, therefore, she is left paying out of pocket expenses of $600.00 per treatment (averaging 3-4 treatments per month). She has spent several weeks in the hospital over the past month. Happy to say she is home now but still suffering. She has been put on a liquid diet and has lost all of her hair. She has become weaker and still suffers with severe stomach pains. Through all of this she is carrying the burden of paying her out of pocket expenses to continue her chemo.
I have known Kathy for many years and I can tell you she is a fighter and a special person to so many people. Throughout all of this, she continues to smile and say "I'm OK". Never does she complain about her situation. I do know the stress of the costs do take a toll on her. I am asking you to please help Kathy pay for the out of pockets expenses to continue her treatment until a supplemental policy is available for her. We need to join her in this fight to continue to be the "miracle" the doctors told her she was.
