Help Katie See Again
Katie is a roughly 3 year old Miniature Schnauzer, who has almost no vision because of cataracts
We rescued Katie from the Contra Costa Martinez shelter in late November. Katie’s foster, Nancy Jackson, took her to Animal Vision Center in Sacramento for evaluation. Dr. Faber there thinks she has a 70-90% chance of good vision after cataract surgery in both eyes. The cost estimate for the surgery is $4645. Unfortunately, Katie does not have $4645. So, she has asked us to help her raise the money.
The shelter told Nancy that Katie and a male companion had been found on the street. When Nancy arrived at the shelter, Katie’s friend had been adopted and she was alone. Katie’s kennel card said she was antisocial and aggressive. She was filthy and in a bad mood when Nancy arrived.
Nancy asked to be left alone with Katie. Nancy sat down on the kennel floor beside Katie, and started speaking to her. Within 5 minutes, Katie was sitting on Nancy’s lap and nudging Nancy’s hand as soon as she stopped petting Katie. Soon, Nancy was able to slip on a collar and a leash and they walked out to the lobby so that Nancy could complete the adoption paperwork.
After getting home, Nancy realized that Katie was almost totally blind. With her male companion adopted away from her, Katie had no one to follow. But, soon she was following Nancy’s dog in and out of the pet door, and has not had even a single accident in the house. Katie shares the home and bed with Nancy’s dog—and with Nancy’s cat.
Katie has been bathed, groomed and has had her teeth cleaned. She is playful, loving and affectionate with her family, but still has fearful aggression around strangers. Katie is young and otherwise healthy, but probably will remain too fearful for adoption until she can see.
Katie is praying you can help her get her vision back. So is Nancy. So are we. Let’s give Katie a great Christmas present!
