Help Kayla get to law school!
Donation protected
Hi all, it’s taking a lot of courage for me to post this, but I hope to receive the love and support of anyone who can donate or share in return.
My name is Kayla Gardner and I am a recent graduate from the University of Miami. I was born and raised in South Florida by a single Black mother, and love my community and all the experiences it’s given me dearly. I have been an advocate for Black lives + disempowered people for as long as I can remember, attending my first protest as a ninth grader following the death of Trayvon Martin and have not looked back since.
Throughout my college career, I regularly attended and sometimes assisted in organizing protests following the election of 45, participated in mentor programs to encourage students of color to leave a positive impact on their community, and was deeply involved on my campus as a student leader. My mother always emphasized the importance of education to me even when it’s hard to make ends meet, and I even found myself balancing three jobs at once during 18 credit semester(s).
Needless to say, I have worked my butt off in college in order to proudly attend THEE Howard University School of Law this coming fall. My decision to attend an HBCU is a costly one, as DC is one of the most expensive cities in the country and due to lack of funding I was not able to receive a scholarship. It is most important to me that I dedicate my career in law to the betterment of Black lives and most importantly protecting Black women, as we are the most disrespected and unprotected people in America (and make up only 2% of lawyers!). Though attending law school in the middle of a pandemic is a bit risky, I want to earn my degree so I can make a positive difference and give back to Black + Brown communities ASAP.
Any amount you can give would be greatly appreciated. The money will go towards relocation costs, books, transportation, and meals. Thank you for reading!
