Kayson’s Story:
14-year old Kayson started experiencing right knee and leg pain in February 2024. At that time, we thought it could be due to a possible baseball injury, as he was playing on a traveling team. However, the pain continued to escalate over the next couple of months. So, we made several doctor and ER visits, only to be given different diagnoses each time. At the end of May, Kayson stood up from his desk at school and felt something pop. After that, he was in severe pain and couldn’t put any weight on his right leg. We took Kayson back to the ER, where he was finally seen by an Orthopedic surgeon, who quickly returned after reviewing the X-ray of Kayson’s right hip, to tell us that he needed emergency surgery immediately for a rare condition called Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE). Kayson was flown to Children’s Hospital of Colorado-Anschutz, where he underwent emergency surgery. This surgery was just a temporary fix to get the head of the femur back into place and eliminate the pain. He was then scheduled for a procedure called “The Modified Dunn Procedure”. On June 17th, Kayson had this nine-hour procedure done, as well as an additional one to his left hip, to put a screw in to prevent SCFE from happening to the left side. Kayson is currently wheel chair bound for 10-12 more weeks, and has a lengthy recovery. He should be able to walk and regain full range of motion by around 9 months. He will have follow up x-rays and appointments in Denver over the next year, to monitor the right hip. While Kayson has insurance, only about half of his medical expenses are covered, and are currently in excess of $124,000. The cost of travel, (transportation, lodging, meals) back and forth to Denver for the surgeries and follow up appointments is estimated to be $6,000. We would be so grateful for any help, as this has created an unexpected and overwhelming hardship on Kayson’s family. All funds received will be used to cover these expenses.
