Keep JFK Kid Safe & Car Free
Some people want to turn Golden Gate Park from:
Who Are We and What Are We Raising Money To Do?
We are Keep Golden Gate Park Kid Safe, a new organization of San Franciscan's dedicated to seeing JFK remain wonderful, safe and accessible to children, seniors, and everyone walking and rolling through this magical public space.
We are raising money to:
a) Do community organizing and run a campaign to educate and rally San Franciscans on the value of the safe JFK Promenade.
b) Do more outreach in Golden Gate Park and in under represented communities
c) Build the movement to protect and expand safe streets across our city
Brief History and Some Context:
During the Pandemic, JFK through Golden Gate Park was deemed a slow street and cars were re-routed to give San Franciscan's a place to enjoy the park without fear of traffic. Thousands of San Franciscan's have enjoyed the benefits of a Safe JFK over the past year. Now, some people want to return JFK to its previous status as a parking lot, traffic corridor, and safety hazard to everyone who uses the park.
What is at stake for Golden Gate Park (The most important public space in San Francisco)?
1. A permanent end to one of the most wonderful things in San Francisco to come out of the pandemic
2. JFK drive will again become one of San Francisco's streets with the highest rate of injury and death (in the top 13% citywide!!!)
3. More danger, noise, and emissions that threaten children in the heart of our park
Unsafe public spaces are highly inequitable
Some city officials are saying that turning Golden Gate Park back into a traffic corridor is necessary to make it equitable. There is so much to do to make San Francisco a more just and equitable place, and keeping Golden Gate Park kid safe is part of the solution. For those who choose to drive to the park, there are over 3500 parking spaces today, while maintaining a Safe JFK drive. And we have been working to make Golden Gate Park even more accessible than it is today and was pre-pandemic: increasing ADA parking, discounted parking in the 800 car below ground parking lot under the music concourse, increase MUNI frequency along with dedicated Golden Gate Park shuttle service. Everyone should be able to access the JFK Promenade and be safe while enjoying it.
