Help One Love Garden Blossom into a Community Farm

Donation protected

Hi Everyone! Shannon and Andy here, asking for your positivity, support, and if we're fortunate, donations which will help us fulfill our vision this year and beyond.

We are first generation sustainable and regenerative farmers. 4 years ago we left New York City to set out on a journey to learn as much as we could about growing food; food grown in nutrient dense soil, sustainably, without the use of chemicals. This thirst for knowledge has led us to  travel across South America too, to gain insight into more traditional and natural farming methods.

After 4 years of hard work as farm employees, 2020 was our first time running our own farm. We found an amazing opportunity to try our hand at farming independently on a retired farmer's land in exchange for growing a supply of food for them to eat.

The season went amazingly well.

We began our first month open for business supplying 25-30 families worth of produce a week, and continued to sustain ourselves and local markets at that rate consistently throughout the season. To do this with access to less than 1/2 an acre of land we had to develop highly effective crop planning and growing practices that actually improved the soil ecology and biodiversity of the space.

Most of all, we devoted a lot of our personal time and energy into healing, amending and regenerating the soil so we could grow the most nutrient dense food possible AND eliminate our dependence on fossil fuel & heavy machinery-based tillage.

Working land that wasn't our own, however, it was not feasible to expand and actualize all of our goals.

While we are extremely grateful for that amazing opportunity, the full vision that we have had for One Love Garden goes beyond the space and natural resources that were available to us in 2020.
There are two big ways we are looking to grow but have not yet been able to:

1.)  Shift to a mixed production model of annual crops, wildtended forest, and regenerative pasture to offer a rich & diverse habitat for people alongside plants and animals... establishing guilds of native tree crops, understory, and wild edges (i.e. forest gardening)... upholding true, indigenous forestry practices of succession and nutrient cycling from forest to field to fallow and back... building earthworks and stable soil carbon that will keep the land fertile for the people 7 generations ahead of us

2.) Restore the focus on growing people and relationships and joy... celebrating nature's abundant harvest and giving everyone interested a meaningful opportunity to share in it... welcoming in other creative talents that can augment life in the garden or even transform it altogether... holding space for friends, family, allies of every kind who have work to do or stories to  share that may be devalued or overlooked in today's society... and of course, spreading love and knowledge of plant- and self-care in the same dedicated, hands-on way we grow our vegetables

To do this we would need the freedom to shape and live with the land in our own way, with a particular need for space and privacy so we can increase access and facilitate new educational and live-work opportunities for others, and a secured interest in the continued health of the land allowing us to decide occupancy and human activities on it going forward.

This is why we are turning to our community to help.

Our goal is to acquire a piece of land that One Love Garden can permanently call a home and bloom into One Love Community Farm.

Our Priorities:

Local sustainable foodways for everyone

We envision a culture that supports decentralized local, community-based exchanges. We strongly believe that more small farms allow for a more sustainable food system.

If we want to discuss ways in which we can start to be more sustainable and move in a direction that is more conscious, then supporting and encouraging local farmers and young aspiring farmers is an important step in the right direction .

The more spaces for growing food there are in close proximity to marginalized communities, the more people will be fed. This way, we can promote eating local and seasonal food and learning traditional ways of preserving and canning the abundance of food that is accessible throughout the growing season.

Nutrient dense, beyond organic food in underserved communities

This land will be a space for healing, learning and growing. Our mission is to create a safe space for BIPOC (Black and indiginous people of color) to learn how to grow food and start farms of their own if they so desire. Serving as an incubator so to speak; a shared space for education and land based businesses.

We were very fortunate to be able farm on our own this season where we had everything we needed to hit the ground running without any upfront investment other than seeds and amendments. If we can return the favor to other aspiring farmers that would be a dream come true.

These funds we raise will go towards securing a piece of land of 10 or more farmable acres and building the necessary infrastructures needed to support the farm.

With much love and thanks,

Shannon & Andy
