Help Keep Randy Riding

Donation protected
Husband, father, grandpa, great grandpa, business owner, Hennepin County Emergency Medical Responder, Loretto Fire Fighter, snowmobile enthusiast, groomer driver and safety instructor. These are just a few of the words which describe Randy Baudler. In March of 2020, Randy was hitting his stride. On Tuesday, March 3rd, he received an award from the Hennepin County Sheriff’s office for his work driving NTSB personnel and first responders to the site of an airplane crash using the Northwest Trails snowmobile club trail groomer. Due to the deep snow, the site was unreachable by any other vehicle. Randy spent 14 volunteer hours making the site accessible so the investigation could continue. That’s the kind of guy he is.

On Friday of that week he headed north to Lake Vermillion for a much anticipated snowmobile club trip. Randy had a bad accident which resulted in a severe leg injury. As the “sweeper”, Randy was at the back of the group and thankfully he was able to call 911 himself. He also called his wife, Sue, to let her know he was hurt. Using his medical training, he directed the EMT’s to apply a tourniquet and was helicoptered from Lake Vermillion to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. The tourniquet saved his life, but they were unable to save his leg and had to amputate just above his right knee. Talk about a week of highs and lows!

As owner of RBS Lawn Care, Randy is busy all spring and summer doing lawn fertilizing and weed control. This summer he was busy healing and getting used to his prosthetic leg. Watch the link below to see how he is doing, it’s pretty amazing!

Randy learning to walk on new leg

However, as hard as he has been working learning to use his new leg, it doesn’t pay the bills. At the end of the summer, after paying others to take care of his customers while he healed, Randy realized he needs financial help. He decided to take advantage of the offer from the snowmobile community and Loretto Fire Department to do a fundraiser on his behalf to help cover some of the expenses that continue to accumulate.

Luckily his prosthetic leg is covered by insurance. However, the upgraded computerized knee (which he’s been using on loan with great success) is excluded from coverage. This computerized knee greatly improves Randy’s stability, ease and manner of walking.  The cost of the computerized knee is $40,000.

Randy also needs a bathroom remodel which will allow him to be safer and more independent at home.  The tub needs to be replaced with a walk-in shower which has grab bars and other accommodations to keep Randy as safe and independent  as possible. The cost estimate for the remodel is a minimum of $10,000. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to cover the computerized knee and bathroom remodel.

Randy has given tirelessly over the years to many individuals and organizations. Please consider making a donation to help him when he needs it most. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. We also ask that you share this link with family and friends in an effort to reach our fundraising goal and get Randy the medical equipment and renovations needed to be comfortable and safe in his home.
