Help Keisha win this battle

“After having 2 near death experiences recently due to liver failure I am certain that I am here for a reason and if nothing else want to live a long life with my family and try to make everyone’s life a little brighter in this sometimes-cruel world.” -Keisha

Keisha is a 38-year-old mom of two beautiful girls and shares a life with Jason, her biggest advocate and personal chef for the past 20 years, 15 of those in Leadville, Colorado. Alex, 14 is always creating & determined to become an engineer and Rhegan, 10 an incredible gymnast and the fashionista of the family.

Keisha has been known for years as “The Face of Early Intervention” in Lake County. She is a certified Optician and part owner of Elevated Eyewear. She is a First Aid and CPR instructor and up until she became extremely ill this past Spring she had held multiple officer positions for many local nonprofit organizations.

Keisha Massarotti, has been suffering from Sjogren’s Syndrome. Many people familiar with Sjogren’s associate it primarily with having dry eyes and dry mouth, as these are the most prevalent symptoms. Unfortunately, in rare cases (affecting just 5% of patients with the disease) Sjogren's attacks the liver. Sadly, Keisha is one of that small 5% and now finds herself in need of a liver transplant.

The Good News:
·        Keisha is thankfully able to accept a liver lobe from a live donor.
·        She is young - just 38 - so she is stronger than many liver donation recipients.
·        The donor does not have to be a relative, it simply needs to be someone between the ages of 18 - 59 with type 0 negative or positive blood.
·        She has health insurance and already has a team of doctors at UCMC working to save her.
·        She has a loving, supportive family to help her through this journey.

The Difficult News:
·        If she doesn’t find a donor, her disease will be fatal.
·        She has already been out of work since May and exhausted her Personal Time Off and Family
Medical Leave benefit, so she no longer has an income.
·        She was recently Terminated from her employment where she had worked for over 10 years as her extended leave request was denied. Her illness would be too much of a hardship due to not knowing when she would be cleared for normal activity.
·        She now will need to pay for COBRA coverage increasing her monthly expenses by nearly $800.
