Keithlee has a rare, typically terminal condition with a life expectancy of a few years. They have been working with a specialist for the past few years, which has been really promising. This treatment is the only path doctors have identified for a chance at significantly extending Keithlee’s life expectancy. Keithlee is a kind, brilliant friend, partner, organizer, and dog parent who consistently shows up for others. Let's come together for Keithlee. Even after various grants and discounts we are working on, the next round of treatment is $18,000. This sum is what stands between a higher quality of life and more time to spend road-tripping with Yuba and Topo, making good food, going to protests, being in love, and annoying their friends.
Some more details about what the money will go to:
- One additional round of treatment, because the last round was promising. Insurance has denied coverage because Keithlee did not meet enough metrics for improvement from the previous round. In other words, even though there are no alternatives and the medical professionals involved predict significant benefits, insurance has written off the treatment as not worth it.
- The next round of treatment should start as soon as possible to improve prognosis, so we’re asking for help to cover costs even as we continue to pursue all other options to reduce the total cost, including additional external insurance appeals, NIH funding, and other avenues.
- If the treatment ends up costing less than the amount we raise, we will post an update and, depending on your stated preference, we can either refund or donate the remaining money to a travel fund to get Keithlee out of the continent for the first time ever over the next year. Whether or not the treatment shows promise, come hell or highwater we are getting Keithlee to the cliffs of Ireland so they can cross off a bucket list priority and savor some melodramatic, windswept, cinematic, bittersweet contemplation of life and death.
