Help Kelly get a LEG!
Donation protected
This is a fundraiser for my brother Kelly. His life was radically changed 2 months ago when he got caught in a pileup while on his way to work. He had to have his left leg amputated above the knee. I am raising money to help get Kelly a prosthetic leg!
Prosthetic legs can be complicated and expensive, which is why many amputees are often relegated to wheelchairs. Kelly is determined to get back to his old routine, but we need your help.
Did you know amputees need prosthetics that are specialized for certain activities?
Amputees need different leg/knee components for:
-Everyday Walking
-Running
-Riding a bike
-Getting in water
Components of a prosthetic leg: Socket , Liner, Knee, Adapter, Foot
The socket's are the component that attaches the prosthetic limb to his body. These sockets are custom built to fit each individual amputee's residual limb. The liner is the form fitting piece that fits inside of the socket. From there the knee is attached along with a prosthetic foot using various adapter pieces depending on the specific set-up.
When searching for a company to build his leg, we found one that was truly innovative. They are using new technology to give amputees the best possible standard of living. The process of fitting and building a functioning leg with quality components isn't cheap. We are estimating the cost to be around $50K. This money would help pay for all of the components, travel to & from the clinics, as well as the physical therapy.
This will be a lifelong journey for Kelly and this is just the first step.
We truly thank you for supporting his journey back to recovery!
-----A little more about Kelly!-----
*** KELLY SERVES HIS COMMUNITY!
Kelly loves to serve! For more than half of his life Kelly has engaged and empowered youth and families in under-resourced communities. One of Kelly's strongest qualities is his ability to engage people around him and help them to feel loved. His heart for the people can be seen every time he smiles and wraps his arms around them.
Kelly's whole life has been devoted to bringing positive change in the lives of those he meets. Since his accident, Kelly has developed a passion for working with people with disabilities. He has even become a "Battle Buddy" helping adaptive youth find joy and strength!
*** KELLY IS AN ATHLETE!
One of the major things to appreciate in life is your mobility. Mobility gives you the ability to pursue passions and adventures. Kelly has always been an adventurous and dedicated athlete. He has high hopes of returning to: Running, Cycling, Triathlons, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Hiking, Kayaking,
Kelly's PT test results put him as a K4 -(the highest classification of amputees) meaning he will return to all normal activities. The journey will be challenging but with the determination and support I know he will be back to everything and even competing. He has aspirations of competing for various Paralympic teams.
The reality about being an adaptive athlete means you have to have different legs for specific purposes. If Kelly wants to get back to his normal life he will eventually need several knee & foot combos to tackle those sports. Right now his top priority is getting back to walking. Once he has walking mastered, he will begin getting comfortable on a running leg and eventually he will tackle his extreme side and work towards mountain biking snowboarding legs!
*** KELLY IS A WARRIOR!
Kelly is driven to not let this injury hold him back. He made this point on the first day after amputation when he took his first steps and he continues to make this type of progress daily. Being just 11 weeks post amputation Kelly is already working out and pursuing a normal life. Kelly's Mindset is this: If a doctor asks Kelly to practice walking up 2 steps, Kelly will walk the whole flight of stairs several times.
This will be a lifelong journey for Kelly and this is just the first step. Any amount helps!
We truly thank you for supporting his journey back to recovery!
