Khazimla's News Release
Local 13-Year-Old Stitches Hope for the Unhoused!
Albuquerque, New Mexico — November 2024
Hello! I'm Khazimla Sinandile, aka Khazi. My grandma, Mama Nkazi, and I are on a mission to make a difference in our community. We're using needles, thread, and heart to sew essential items for Albuquerque's unhoused individuals.
Our goal is to provide comfort and dignity by creating pillows, bags, and blankets, so they don't have to sleep on the cold, hard floor. My grandma trains young people who came to the USA from war-torn zones and at-risk yet resilient youth and adults.
My Grandma's Legacy
My grandma has been sewing for a long time, and we're working together to turn fabric scraps into practical goodies. We specialize in waterproof pillows and bags to keep our homeless friends dry. We're grateful for donations of fabric scraps, but our goal is to collect at least 60 yards of waterproof fabric to continue our project, especially as we train more kids.
Challenges and Helpers
My grandma, aged 75, is facing health challenges, making it difficult for her to sit and sew for long periods. She's survived two near-death experiences and is suffering from severe pain. Despite this, we're joined by other young refugee and local girls who are sewing bags and pillows at our center and from home using donated sewing machines.
Ways to Help
You can support our project by:
- Donating at (www.irrva.org) or mailing donations to P.O. Box 93445, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
- Funding for 12 new sewing machines and waterproof materials/fabrics
Your contributions will help us provide comfort to the homeless.
