Help Kimberly Conquer Ovarian Cancer!

Donation protected
On Valentine’s Day of this year my 53-year-old sister, Kimberly McMahon, woke with excruciating abdominal pain and, after hours of trying to alleviate the pain on her own, went to the ER. Within three hours of arrival Kimberly was diagnosed with ovarian cancer  and was admitted to the cancer ward at St Alexius Medical Center in suburban Chicago.

After meeting with three oncologists, and undergoing additional testing, it was decided that surgery would be the first course of treatment, followed by chemotherapy. When the surgeon began the operation he discovered that the grapefruit-sized tumor enveloping her left ovary had ruptured and leaked into her abdomen and attached itself to her pelvis. Additionally, there were lesions on her right ovary.

The surgeon initially diagnosed her with adenocarcinoma and she is awaiting pathology reports so her cancer can be staged and graded. She learned on the morning of February 20th that she may be sent to Johns Hopkins for treatment.

It is important that you know that Kimberly also suffers from lupus , psoriatic arthritis , and ulcerative colitis , and has ongoing medical expenses associated with those diseases. Individually each of these diseases are difficult to manage, but collectively they are insurmountable.

Kimberly has volunteered and given her time to several charities in the Chicago area. Whether it was distributing food to families with the Greater Chicago Food Depository , or serving meals to the homeless at the Pacific Garden Mission, she has given to the community. The Howard Brown Health Center , serving the uninsured and low-income LGBTQ community, has benefitted from her fundraising work. Kimberly is most proud of her work with Chef Art Smith’s charity, Common Threads . Educating children about the importance of nutrition and food sources are a high priority, as is teaching children basic gardening skills at inner-city community gardens.

Kimberly is also a front-line worker in the veterinary medical field. She gives her time and attention to every animal that comes into the small clinic where she works, and loves them as if they were her own. Her dog, Ruby, is a rescued special needs pup. When Ruby was available for adoption people refused to consider her because of her special needs; but Kimberly saw only a dog in need, and lovingly rescued her. In addition to her own medical expenses, she has Ruby’s special food, medications and specialty veterinarians adding to her financial obligations.

Kimberly is a single woman of modest means with no remaining sick time and thus no income. She needs our help to pay for medical treatment, loss of income rent, utilities, and other expenses. Please consider donating to this loving woman who has given so much to the community.
