Meet Kitty, an 11-month-old kitten with a heart full of love and a fighting spirit. Kitty and her brother were rescued when they were just 2 and 4 months old, and Matteo adopted them from an animal association. From that day on, Kitty has been Matteo’s shadow, his constant companion, and the light of his life. He loves her to bits, and she never leaves his side—until now.

On January 11th, Kitty had a terrifying seizure early in the morning. Matteo found her trembling and we rushed her to the nearest vet hospital. She was in critical condition with low glucose and hypothermia. By January 12th, she had to be transferred to a hospital further away because she needed an urgent blood transfusion—something the nearby hospital couldn’t provide.

In the days leading up to the seizure, Kitty had been treated as an outpatient for low glucose and what was initially thought to be liver failure. But further tests revealed a heartbreaking diagnosis: Feline Infectious Peritonitis (PIF).

What is PIF?

PIF is a severe and often fatal disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus. It can affect various organs, leading to symptoms such as fever, anemia, weight loss, and neurological issues, as in Kitty’s case. While PIF was once considered untreatable, new antiviral treatments are offering hope for survival. However, these treatments are incredibly expensive and require intensive care.

Kitty is a fighter and is doing better now, but she’s not out of the danger zone yet. She’s still in the hospital receiving around-the-clock care, medications, and transfusions. Matteo is doing everything he can for her, but the costs are overwhelming.
