Help Kiwi Write Her Family History!

Donation protected
Karen "Kiwi" Burch was born and raised in East Hollywood, a previously redlined neighborhood that her grandfather, a formerly enslaved man from Mississippi, homesteaded with his wife in 1892. Generations of Kiwi's family lived in the neighborhood where they survived in solidarity with their Japanese-American neighbors through the 20th century. Kiwi was the last remaining family member to live in the neighborhood her family helped build until she was displaced due to high rents in 2019.

Kiwi has been working on a book about her family's history for many years, but finding time to think and write between her many freelance jobs has slowed her progress. We know it is Kiwi's dream to finish writing this important book that speaks to the long history of one of Los Angeles' most vibrant neighborhoods, so we are raising money for her upcoming 70th birthday in the hopes that this money will buy her some time to work on this book.

Please join us in celebrating Kiwi's 70th birthday by making a donation. Even the smallest donations will help give Kiwi the time and freedom she needs to write.

(This fundraiser is being run by Kiwi's niece Katie.)
