Help Kona Beat Nasal Aspergillosis

Donation protected

Hi, my name is Kona, and I have been battling nasal aspergillosis ( that’s a fungal infection in my nose) since late February 2019.
When I started having snot out of my nose my parents took me to the vet right away, they ruled out a bacterial infection and parasites and referred me to the VCA CARE Centre, in Calgary. It was there where, by CT scan, that my parents were told it might be fungal.
The team at the CARE Centre has worked so hard to help me beat it. I underwent my first surgery (and biopsy to confirm it’s fungal) on May 22. They had to shave my head, and make a small incisions so they could infusion my frontal sinus with the medicine.
It looks scary but I’m a tough girl and I recovered quickly. My parents were so relieved when I started to get better and the snot went away. Soon, my fur was growing back and I was out living my best dog life!
I was symptom free for about nine weeks when I was out on a walk with my mom and she saw I had snot again. My mom and dad were heartbroken. My team at the CARE Centre told my parents I needed another infusion. They said up to 97% of dogs are cured after two infusion. So off I went for my second infusion on August 22.
About three weeks after my second surgery my snot came back. After many conversations with my CARE team we decided to try a combination of oral anti fungal medications that have shown great results with dogs, like me, who have a treatment resistant fungal infection. Unfortunately, the one medication made me feel really sick and I stopped eating. They gave me another medication to make my tummy feel better but it wasn’t working and I lost 7lbs in one week. We had to reconsider my treatment.
So the plan became this, another CT scan, another infusion, but we would also do a nasal flush with medication. That’s where they block off my nasal passage at both ends and run the medication through the passage for an hour (broken into 15 minutes on my tummy, my back, and each side). We would also continue with one oral medication, that my mom says cost $1261 per month. It was scheduled for December 12.
On the day of my procedure and surgery everything was going according to plan, I got my CT scan done and I was in the first 15 minutes of my nasal flush when my end tidal CO2 levels increased abruptly while everything else remained normal. The critical care team was rushed in and everyone troubleshooted extensively but were unable to get that value down to a normal level. The decision was made that it was best they stop the procedure. I gave everyone, especially my mom and dad, a big scare as no one knew if I would have any neurological issue when they woke me up. But I’m a tough dog and I woke up and was myself. Problem is I didn’t end up getting the treatment I need and without it the infection will continue to spread.
I am so important to my parent. They tell me every day how special and loved I am. They are working as hard as they can to pay for all my treatment but it’s really starting to add up.  Any money that’s donated will be used first for my medication and next procedure, and secondly to pay down the dept accumulated from my previous treatment costs. Our estimated cost so far is around $14,600.
Currently, I am recovering from my last failed procedure and my doctor says we will make a treatment plan for me in a few weeks. Were not sure what that will cost but my Dr. said we would need to add an anesthesiologist to the team to monitor me as my case is now critical.
Thank you so much for reading Kona’s story and for considering helping us continue with her treatment. She is the most beautiful, sweet, loving pup who means the world to us. She is so important to our little family and we will continue to do everything we can to help her beat this. We are so grateful for all the love everyone has show us throughout this struggle and would truly appreciate any donations.
