ABOUT US
Starting out as a house party curated by friends, queer latinx dance party La Choloteca has developed into a brand that connects people from a range of different cultures to social justice issues that directly impact their identities. As we approach our 4th anniversary, La Choloteca continues to focus on the experiences of Latinidad in the South East, a region inflicted with deep-rooted historical racism. Centering ourselves in this narrative we strive to dismantle our fears of otherness, through embracing our unique cultural value to the future of the South, this country, and to black and brown communities across all borders.
HOW COVID HAS IMPACTED OUR WORK:
As leaders in a movement that is extremely rooted in community and 100% dependent on nightlife events, we have been hit hard by COVID-19. Not only has our latinx community at large been disproportionately affected by COVID-19, but La Choloteca has not had the resources to sustain itself without our events. Our organizers have been personally affected both financially and emotionally. We reflect our community. We are like you. We are surviving despite facing ambiguity, despite losing incomes, despite being single mothers, despite all of the emergencies, heartbreak, and loss this year has brought to all of us.
Here we are: handling continuous disruption and managing uncertainty. If there is one thing we cannot afford to lose, it is our HOPE.
To be honest, we have had moments throughout this year that felt discouraging but those moments have helped us to realize just how much healing La Choloteca has offered throughout these 4 years. Both within ourselves and within our entire community. Without the regenerative energy of our monthly events, we have felt at a distance from our ancestral roots and the guidance that dance played for our spiritual growth.
Even though we can’t currently sweat on the dancefloor with one another.
Our bloodlines still push for movement.
Creating this space has been more than just dancing; it’s been a shift toward completeness and belonging when the rest of the world has felt unsafe.
We dismiss the despair that seeps into our souls when we are alone, with the magic and strength of our united experience we connect. We find relief. We push farther, try harder, and make a difference.
Together we have made it here.
Together we are seen.
Together we fight.
HELP US:
Growing up brown in the South comes with a heaviness, sometimes even a fear. This is why spaces like La Choloteca are so vital.
We need financial assistance to realistically and consistently remain a safe space for latinx folks and be a supportive agent of their queerness, livelihood, and future dreams.
We are asking for $50,000!
This money will help us to sustain leadership that will create culturally relevant programming and be authentically present for our community. Through our programming, we plan to empower artists through paid opportunities, giving the money we make right back into our local economy and sustaining an art and music scene that elevates black, brown, and indigenous identities. This money will also provide jobs to community leaders working to produce micro revolutions of empowered Latinx artists. With our connection to a greater national network, we can foster social justice activism and a united voice in our struggles. We are excited to produce with you and for you! Para la cultura!
A TASTE OF THINGS TO EXPECT:
Live video shoots w. local Music artists
Podcast on culture
Creative Mentorships
Art Shows/ Events
Meaningful Collaborations with Non-Profits
Social Justice Dialogue
Activism Engagement
With your help, we can do more than just sustain La Choloteca; we can help our community flourish and thrive. Cultural change is dependent on our artists, creatives, and cultural workers. We will lead the charge in envisioning what is possible for our futuro. Help us to exemplify leadership for the cultural shift we so desperately need.
Since the launch of La Choloteca, we’ve seen latinx of all different backgrounds have the courage to reach for those bold dreams, we’ve seen traditionally white spaces overcrowded with black and brown bodies dancing joyously to spanish-language music, we’ve seen those same spaces play our playlists on nights full of white patrons too! We’ve seen our impact in the south east with parties popping up in Durham, Birmingham and Asheville. This party and brand is the cultural work we carry in our hearts through the guidance of our ancestors.
We have been able to create a sense of belonging that encompasses both our joy and our very real political existence in the South. Celebration, laughter, and dance is how we fight back toxic dominant cultural conditions. We believe that we can create a culture that is conducive for all people to thrive and flourish.
