On August 13, 2024, the Boston Landmarks Commission voted to accept a petition to further study whether to landmark the former home of the late U.S. Congressman John Joseph (“Joe”) Moakley and his late wife Evelyn, located at 1812 Columbia Road in South Boston (the “Moakley House”). Completion of the landmarking process will require a written study report by an architectural historian hired as a third-party consultant. This fundraising campaign seeks contributions to assist with the funding for this important research and written report.
Joe Moakley made significant political and historical contributions to the city of Boston, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the United States of America, and the world as a whole, having served in several elected roles in local, state, and national government. The Moakley House, where the couple lived for their entire marriage and Joe’s whole political career, is a critical marker of Joe’s and Evelyn’s memory in the City Point neighborhood of South Boston. It is mentioned in several historical sources, including Joe’s obituary. Furthermore, the Moakley House is a fine example of Colonial Revival architecture that is a critical anchor to the surrounding architectural landscape in the neighborhood. For these reasons, please consider contributing to the Save The Moakley House Fund to support the necessary historical study to complete the landmarking process.
Boston residents: please also sign the petition to let the Landmarks Commission and elected officials know you support this effort: https://www.change.org/p/landmark-the-historic-moakley-house-in-south-boston
