Coach Larry Jury is a basketball coach/trainer in the greater Portland/Vancouver area. For the last 20 years, Coach has used the game of basketball to mentor youth and help them lead successful lives both on and off the court. Coach is the father of two young adults, but a dad to so many others who have needed one. He was recently diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (a type of bone cancer) and is now in need of help to cover medical expenses, at-home care (once he is released from the hospital) and bills.
Coach’s business "Dream Team Basketball" has helped pave a way for many of the youth in his community to achieve success both in basketball and in life. He has always believed that basketball is a tool that should be used in order obtain a better life; that the skills learned on the court are wasted if the attitude, hard work and sportsmanship are not also emphasized. Coach's end goal has never been to produce professional basketball players. His goal is always to produce professionals in life. Regardless of skill or background or economic standing or upbringing, Coach encouraged and pushed his athletes to grow and be outstanding citizens and leaders in their communities. He has watched his athletes grow to become lawyers. Pharmacists. Business owners. College Graduates. Teachers. Coaches.
As it did for so many others, 2020 dealt a major hit to Larry’s business. The pandemic destroyed his goals for that year and his finances took a hit without the work. Larry’s business took a hit in 2020. His health is taking a hit in 2021.
Coach took a fall in his home and began complaining of hip and back pain. Several doctor's visits indicated that he had a hip contusion. However, the pain kept getting worse, so bad that Larry could no longer walk. His family took him to the emergency room and after bloodwork and several tests, doctors confirmed his diagnosis on February 5th. Multiple Myeloma. He has been in the hospital ever since.
Coach Jury has always made it a priority to not only help his own children achieve their goals, but also the children in his community, achieve theirs. He has answered the call. He has suited up again and again to provide and protect and produce for his athletes. But Coach Jury is playing a different game right now. A bigger one.
There’s no game plan here. No amount of skill or knowledge that can deter this opponent. There’s no scouting report that can guarantee a win. All Coach Jury can do is suit up and fight. His family can suit up and play. His doctors can suit up and play. His nurses can suit up and play.
And we ask that you suit up and play. Whether that is with money or prayers or well wishes or support. In whatever capacity you can and whatever skills you can bring. We ask you to show up, to show out, and to help us get a win.
