Help Laura & Wendell in Their Time of Need
Donation protected
My name is Angel Leighton, I am one of many cousins to Laura & Wendell Carr.
Wendell & Laura are in a time of need.
Starting in October of 2024, Wendell got very sick. After multiple ER visits & many doctor appointments, Wendell was diagnosed with liver failure. That diagnosis made Wendell an urgent candidate for a donor’s liver. He was given a cell phone & told, ‘if it rings, answer it’ - this phone call would be the call to let Wendell & Laura know there was a liver available & it was time to head to Boston for the much needed surgery! Unfortunately, while waiting for his liver transplant, he started to decline in health, severely.
The morning of March 6, 2025 was probably the scariest day of them all. Wendell didn’t wake up; although still alive, he was completely unconscious & unresponsive. Laura & Wendell’s mom did all they could to try to wake him that morning, as well as the paramedics when they arrived at their home. With no luck he was brought to the ER where we would later find out his ammonia levels were too high due to his failing liver.
Luckily around 9PM that same day, after some treatment, he started to wake up. They continued to treat him in the hospital for a couple days until it was safe to go home.
On March 24th the cell phone finally rang, it was the call everyone had been waiting for; a liver was available & it was time to go to Boston! Sadly, soon after receiving the good news, another call came in & it was explained that the liver wasn’t viable. The waiting began again.
During this waiting period, Wendell declined even more & was told he needed to be hospitalized until a viable liver became available & they could operate, as it was the safest place for him to be.
Finally, April 2nd, a liver was available & deemed viable; the 6 hour surgery would take place starting at 8PM. On the morning of April 3rd we all found out the surgery was a success & the liver was operating as anticipated!
Wendell would rest for 5 more days in ICU until being moved to his room. Currently, Wendell is still in the hospital; he has a long road to recovery.
As you can imagine, with Wendell being out of work for several months & Laura having to take time off & eventually, taking a leave of absence from work to care for Wendell, they need our help more than ever.
We ask for your help by donation. Your donation will help with paying medical bills, car payments, house payments, utilities & food. Wendell is a lovable, honest & dependable person who would do anything for anyone. I urge you to give what you can to help them in this time of need.
If anyone is interested in preparing a home cooked, healthy meal please contact my daughter Julia & she will help coordinate what days are available. After a liver transplant, a balanced diet rich in protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is crucial for healing & long-term health, while limiting saturated fats, sugar, and sodium. She will have suggestions of meals that follow these specific guidelines if needed.
Thank you kindly for taking the time to read & for considering a donation or meal.
