Please help Leakhena get the medical help she needs to survive

Hi, my name is Tina. I am raising funds for my cousin Leakhena, in order for her to get the medical help she needs to survive.

Leakhena is a 28-year old woman from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She is the daughter of my Aunt, Ra, who is a single mother. Leakhena has always had high spirits and despite the cards life had dealt her, she has always had a kind heart, filled with love and strived to give herself a better life through hard work.

About 2 years ago, Leakhena’s health started to decline and slowly over time she started to lose the ability to make decisions and care for herself. My family has attempted to get her care in Cambodia but for a number of factors, she has not been able to get the level of care she needs in order to get better.

Here are the factors:
  • Her family does not have the financial means to get quality care
  • Corruption in the Healthcare system: if you do not pay a large sum of money up-front, you will not get care. And once you do, you are not guaranteed quality care with proper testing or diagnoses with proper treatment
  • Lack of resources for people like my family, including access to quality healthcare and even education on how to handle this
  • General cultural lack of understanding and awareness on mental health and overall healthcare (knowing what sort of doctors to seek, where, and what questions to ask, care to seek in order to advocate for yourself and others)

To give some backstory on the general state in Cambodia:

Cambodia is generally a 3rd world country, a developing country, and one of the poorest countries in the world. Despite its economic growth in 2024, there is still a lack of resources available for a majority of the country that is not in the middle class or above. Not too long ago, Cambodia experienced a genocide of over 1.2 million people where many of our educators, socialites, and doctors were executed amongst the rest of our people. So you can imagine how this impacts the lives of our people years later, in terms of humanitarianism.

With all that being said, despite seeking help in Cambodia, her health continues to deteriorate by each day. We do not know what her condition is other than knowing that it seems to be cognitively degenerative.

On behalf of my dear cousin, I am writing this to advocate for her right to get proper medical help and to give her family the opportunity to seek help for their loved one. At this point, we need resources to take her to the neighboring country, Thailand, in order to get the proper medical help she deserves.

All funds will go directly to her mother in order to cover the following costs:
  • Travel to Thailand and any costs associated for food, accommodation, etc.
  • Medical bills
  • Funds for additional care needed (care taker, translators, etc.)

I am traveling to Southeast Asia later this year to help advocate for her. However, with the rate that she is deteriorating, I am afraid we are running out of time and I hope for her to get resources urgently so that she can start the process of seeking help before I arrive, as I imagine this will be ongoing.

Thank you for taking the time to hear this story, for spreading the word and for your contributions. Thank you for helping me save her life.
