Aid LGBTQI in East Africa

Hi, my name is Skirt and I am raising funds for my friend Elvis stuck in COVID-lockdown at the UNHCR refugee camp in Kakuma, Kenya.

ELVIS: I met Elvis on Reddit. Born in Uganda, Elvis was forced to flee his home after suffering violence at the hands of his own family. He made it as far as Kenya, where the UNHCR promised to re-home LGBTQI+ refugees somewhere safe, but COVID forced the entire country into lockdown. The refugees have been stuck in scarcity, misery, and conflict with the locals for the past two years.

Elvis has taken on a leadership role among the queer and transgender refugees. With the aid of a phone and solar charging station, he has reached out on social media to ask for help from his global family. He and his mates experience cruelty and daily discrimination from hospitals, police, officials, and other homophobic refugees.

TRIAL BY FIRE: In the middle of August 2021, Elvis and his mates returned after a game of soccer to find their camp engulfed in flames. Unable to extinguish the fire, they could do nothing but watch their shelter and possessions reduced to ashes. Since then, my friends have been sleeping on the ground underneath thin blankets.

With your help and regular weekly donations, we raised funds to build new shelters, purchase sleeping kits, and build a fence. The need is great, but fortunately for those living in Kenya, a little USD goes a long way. Medication, medical supplies, and food are needed daily.


UNMET NEEDS: The amount of food that is afforded to refugees by the UNHCR is woefully inadequate for a human being to live on. With donated funds, campmates can purchase food to cook at camp and share with children and others who are in need. Medication can be difficult to come by. The public medical facility is discriminatory against the LGBTQ population, and so medical help must be sought at a private facility. Of course, there are charges for services and without donations, the campmates cannot afford urgent care - such as medication for malaria or treatment for a scorpion sting.
