k9 Safe Haven Rescue & Lil Mama's Mass Removal

I'm Lisa, the founder of K9 Safe Haven Rescue, based in Valparaiso, IN. We're a foster-based rescue that's all about giving dogs in need a second chance at life. Meet Lil Mama and Atlas, our first rescues of the year! They're a pair of surrendered purebred boxers who deserve a fresh start. They are staying at my home. Initially, I tried to get them placement with several other rescues, but they all were full. So, I made K9 Safe Haven Rescue LLC. The boxers were kept outside this winter, so I took them in with permission, after learning of their outdoor living winter arrangement.

I picked them up at midnight on a Sunday in Jasper County, IN the night it got below zero degrees outside. I didn't have the financial resources, but I couldn't sleep knowing about them being left outside (their family moved away) and they would likely freeze to death.

As a full-time dog trainer and animal lover, I couldn't ignore their plight when I heard about it from one of my dog training clients. Despite financial challenges, I've been to the vet four times the first month with the pups - both Lil Mama and Atlas tested positive for Lyme disease but are done with meds now. They will need a vet appointment to recheck their bloodwork in June. Otherwise, Atlas is healthy.

Medical expense 2: We'd like to opt into an elective mass removal surgery for a spot on her chin, which could be benign or more serious. 2 vets have told us it is likely not cancer, but we want to ensure her health and reassure potential adopters if we are able.
