Help Lisa K. Collins in her will to walk again

On the night of July 1st 2017 Lisa's life as she knew it changed in a instant. Lisa was getting ready for bed while her husband was checking on their two small children. Lisa lost her footing and fell down their flight of
stairs. It was literally 5-minutes after they got home, that's how fast life can change. Lisa's husband Ronnie, found her unconscious at the bottom of
their staircase and could not get her to awake. At that moment he knew how serious this was and called 911.
EMS realized the severity of the accident as a possible spinal cord injury right away and was careful to move her. Lisa was airlifted to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio Texas.. Lisa awoke in and out screaming in pain, none of which she remembers. The Doctors discovered that Lisa had shattered her L1 vertebrae and the pieces of her vertebrae were causing spinal cord fluid to leak. Lisa underwent emergency surgery to fuse her spine together with rods and screws. This surgery which the family was told would last 6 hours ended up being 8 hours due to the severity. But even after surgery Lisa was left paralyzed from the waist down. On top of this she suffered a bad concussion, had a severe break in her left arm, along with bruised ribs. Lisa spent 3 months in Warm Spring Rehab learning how to function again. She couldn't even sit up on the side of the bed without falling over.
Lisa's has now spent the last 2 1/2 years struggling to regain her
mobility while still trying to be a great mom and handle "real life" from a wheelchair
Lisa's home had to be renovated to accommodate her disability needs, none of which was covered by insurance but her husband and family got it done in time for her to come home.
Lisa's journey has sent her through a rigorous rehabilitation but she has done her best to pick herself back up on bad days just cries it and moves on. She continues to try very hard to stay optimist throughout her therapy.
She had to learn how to do everyday chores that we take for
granted in a wheelchair like cooking, bathing and caring for her
children. Coming home and learning how to function in everyday life was one of the most difficult things she has ever faced. There would be days she would just cry all day and lots of frustration and screaming while she was at home during the day. The last 2 1/2 years have left her physically, emotionally and financially
challenged.
She continued her outpatient physical therapy, only available in the medical center area in San Antonio and after 2 years she was emotially down and losing her fight which any of you who know Lisa can attest to how much she will fight. The rehab available to her in San Antonio was not able to getting her to the ultimate goal of getting out of the wheelchair and walking. In between this time Lisa also underwent 2 outpatient surgeries to put in devices to help with bladder control and the terrible nerve and back pain, also not easy on one's body.
Lisa was at a point where she was told by doctors this may be the best it will be, you have hit a plateau. Lisa was not going to stop trying. She had to seek other options for therapy and in May God answered and helped her find React Neuro Rehab Center in Dallas Tx,
She was introduced to React from a colleague at work whose 23 year old son suffered a spinal cord injury just 20 days after Lisa. React is a non-profit facility, 501(c)(3) that was established in 2012. React has certified strength coaches in neuro-rehabilitation. They are like no other, Lisa calls them PIONEERS in the rehabilitation from a spinal cord injury. Lisa has made remarkable progress in 3 months. I am not sure if all of you are aware but Lisa has no use or feeling of her lower legs, ankles or feet and no feeling in her bladder area. React works to strength the body and train the brain on what these muscles should do. She had no idea how much walking was a mental activity. She literally has to tell her legs and feet and hips what to do and concentrate on control of the body parts (which there are so many) that are used to walk. She is able to now walk with a rollator walker for short distances and can sit and stand holding onto something with little assistance. She can even apply pressure in her heels by telling them what to do now. This she could not do before going to rehab at React. The equipment available at this facility is like no other, all donated by good corporate citizens. React thinks outside the box! And they continue their learning journey on SPI rehabilitation everyday, bringing in new techniques all the time! Lisa's fight is back!!
Being that React is a non- profit facility it requires all CASH pay, insurance at this time will not over the cost. It was recommended Lisa go 3x per week, 2 hours each session at $100 per hour. That equals about $2,400 a month. It is hard enough that Lisa has to be away from her family on top of the financial burden of rehab. And anyone that knows Lisa and Ronnie knows they put their kids first and make sure they continue to play on the sport teams. Ronnie & Lisa are not one to ask for handouts but this place is so important to her that she graciously asking for help
Lisa is one of my dearest friends. We have been friends for 36 years. She is one of the most strong willed persons I know! Her mom said God made her so strong and stubborn for this reason to fight her way through this tragedy. I was there for her at BAMC, and saw her in such terrible pain and agony. I was there for her at Warm Springs and there for her when she went home. I even got to tour the React facility when Lisa first went to view It and the second we left she said "This is where I need to be". It just breaks my heart when she tells me how she wishes she could just get up out of her chair and run, run and bump balls on the volleyball court with Addy, coaching her daughter and running like a speedster at ever daily function. Lisa went from a very active life to a life stuck in a chair. If she is going to get out of this chair she needs to continue her rehab at React for as long as she can to reach her goals. Lisa is a fighter and wont give up and at some point they will train her on what she will have to do from home. That is also part of what React does.
Many of you have asked "What can I do to help"? I have created an opportunity for you to do just that. I have created a GoFund me account in Lisa's name "Lisa Kay's Road to Recovery.
