Greetings from Little Shelter
As a special friend of Little Shelter, you know that we aren't your typical animal shelter. Our no-kill promise means we will never euthanize an animal because of a lack of shelter space: Our standard is to provide love and uncompromised medical care to all of our animals until they are adopted.
2020 and 2021 certainly presented unimagined challenges for Little Shelter, but we still managed to rescue and adopt record numbers of animals, 30% more than pre-pandemic.
Now, we are thrilled to announce the launch Phase 1 of Little Shelter's $3 Million Capital Campaign to fund our urgently needed shelter renovation…and to be successful, we need your help.
Our shelter is a magical place, with a rich history that we're very proud of. But our buildings are 95 years old. With leaks and disrepair, it is hard to heat and cool them, and the dog kennels are all but crumbling. We have dealt with things the best we can for a long time but now we need to drastically improve our facility, to continue to properly care for the many dogs and cats we plan to rescue and re-home for the future.
We are ready to give our animals the shelter they deserve. We hope you can join us on this life-saving mission.
The renovations will include:
• Tearing down and rebuilding the dog kennels with more space in and out
• Modernizing the cattery
• Creating a new visitor entry
• Adding adoption meet-and-greet rooms
• Installing a kitten nursery
• Updating the surgical center, recovery areas
• Creating designated office space for staff and a welcoming community room for educational programs
• Updating all heating, cooling, water, sewage and electrical
• And so much more....
Over the last few months, the Little Shelter team has been diligently preparing for these much-needed renovations by securing ace architect, Jim Smiros of Smiros and Smiros Architects and Bacon Group Architecture, specialists in animal care. Together they have completed the architectural and mechanical plans and the Town of Huntington has granted us our building permits. Now we have to secure generous initial donations and pledges towards the work.
