Help Luna's Cafe
Last night, someone smashed out the window to Luna's Cafe and stole some stuff.
As many of you know, Luna's Cafe is a cultural landmark in Sacramento.
Back when I was at my worst, I would get high out of my mind and attend the Luna's open mic on Thursday nights. I was broke, so I would sneak in bottles of whiskey, and every time Art Luna would catch me and gently kick me out. He was always firm, but kind. He liked my writing. I liked his Cafe. I understood.
Over the years, as I began to heal, I would pop in and see how everything was going. It turns out, Luna's is the same. People use the space as a solace from the corporate world of #dining. It's an escape from everything bad that our world has become.
Young poets and musicians use the space to present their art and old writers scratch out poems in the corner, all to the tune of a whirring blender from the bar.
Whenever I step inside, I know that my life, in part, was saved because of that place, because of Art's sturdy and kind demeanor. Because of the community that formed around that place.
When I took my first job as a professional writer, I nodded my head in the directioon of Luna's where Art let me fail and flail until I finally found the confidence to take my art into the world.
Luna's Cafe is one of the last of its kind and I owe the place more than I can quantify.
Art Luna works tirelessly to bring art, music, writing, culture, and food to our once small city that's expanding into another faceless megacorporation.
Someone broke his window the other night and stole a bunch of stuff. Times are rough; people are desperate, I get it, but when someone breaks Art Luna's window, we should help him fix it.
XOXO
