Hi, this is a fundraiser and prayer request for Madden Brown who is fighting a rare bacteria that he contracted while on vacation in Florida. All proceeds will go to him and his defeat of this bacteria as well as assisting him as he conquers the chronic granulomatus disease (CGD). This disease is rare. Only about 20 children are born with it every year. It will change his way of life and we will be looking at multiple daily medications moving forward.

The bacteria is Chromobacterium viloaceum, which is commonly in soil and subtropical climates. It is a rare cause of severe and often fatal human disease. There have only been about 150 cases worldwide. Human infection with this organism results in systemic and severe disease with a high fatality rate. The bacteria is found in stagnant brackish waters.

Madden started having symptoms of a stomach virus on Saturday, July 29. He had an initial ER visit and was admitted with strep and dehydration on Monday, July 31. He was released on Tuesday, but his symptoms continued to grow and change. His mom brought him back to the ER on Wednesday, because his fever had rose to almost 104 and he was having joint/muscle pain. He was quickly admitted with the doctors knowing they were dealing with something serious. Madden was already showing signs of sepsis. Luckily, OLOL is the first in the nation to implement life-saving sepsis detection technology.

His diagnosis is Chromobacterium violaceum, Sepsis with Acute Respiratory Failure and Septic Shock. He is also being treated for Acute Respiratory Failure with Hypoxia, Liver Lesion, Portal Vein Thrombosis, Splenic Lesion, Alteration in Nutrition, Pain in Both Lower Extremities. He is retaining fluid everywhere, but especially around his lungs, in one knee and in one hand.

He has low blood pressure, low oxygen levels, a large amount of fluid around his lungs, muscle/joint pain, a blood clot on his liver and it appeared to be abscessed.

They started him on positive pressure ventilation to help with his breathing. However, Thursday morning, Aug 3, the doctors decided that he needed to be intubated to help his lungs rest.

He has been suffering from very low blood pressure. He has been on two medications to keep his BP high enough to support him. They have been keeping him sedated.

Currently, the cultures of blood and sputum have grown the purple strain of bacteria (chromobacterium viloaceum) They have sent the blood culture to Mayo Clinic for confirmation.

The doctors have said that the fatality rate in most countries is 50%, but he has a little better percentage, because we have better technology in the US. He has a long road ahead of him and a true battle. The doctors are saying that he could be on IV antibiotics for at least 3 months.

We will try to post at least daily updates here. We ask that you assist his mom with being able to care for Madden’s needs.

Our plan is to utilize the donations received to get him and his mom through this. ANY money not used for that and left after he is well WILL be donated to either other children suffering from a rare bacteria or to the research of this rare bacteria in humans.

We want to share his story with others. We want people to realize this can happen.

Even if you cannot donate, we ask that you say prayers for him. We love you all and we appreciate all!
