In early December of 2022, Maddie and Jake found out they were pregnant with their first child. They were completely thrilled, happy, and ecstatic of the news. On Christmas, Jake proposed to Maddie after seven years of being together, and she said YES!
A couple of weeks later, Maddie discovered a small lump in her left breast. In January of 2023, her OBGYN suggested she get an ultrasound on the mass. Unfortunately after the ultrasound and a biopsy, it was discovered that Maddie has invasive ductal carcinoma at 8 weeks pregnant. She had a CT scan in February and the results showed suspicious pulmonary nodules in her lungs on top of her breast and lymph node tumors. Her oncologists believed it was her breast cancer metastasizing to her left lung and staged her cancer as terminal.
Maddie's oncology team prepared her to start chemotherapy during her second and third trimester in the hopes that it was eradicate the main tumor in her breast, lymph nodes and the nodes in her lungs. Starting February 23rd, 2023, at the beginning of Maddie's second trimester, she started an aggressive form of chemotherapy called the "Red Devil" every three weeks. She was extremely fortunate to have minimal side effects minus hair loss.
May 15th, 2023 a CT scan was taken and it showed that the pulmonary nodules in her lungs were gone as well as the cancer in her breast and lymph nodes. They were extremely relieved and were able to spend their last trimester focused on bringing Charlotte into the world.
Charlotte Jolene Chaffee was born on August 3rd, 2023 at 5:32 pm. She was born completely healthy despite the 10 rounds of chemotherapy that she went through with Maddie. Both Mom and Dad were overjoyed and relieved! They were both completely in love with her from the moment they saw her.
Recently, Maddie found another small breast lump right after delivering Charlotte and was diagnosed again with invasive ductal carcinoma. Due to the seriousness of her diagnosis and the cancer recurrence, Maddie's oncologist referred her to the Mayo Clinic. She is hoping to get some more treatment options or to be apart of a clinical trial to try and shrink the mass that has taken over.
Maddie has exhausted all of her sick and vacation pay as well as the hours that her co-workers donated to her. She is now on unpaid leave which means Maddie has no income, and her employer is no longer contributing to her insurance. Because of this, Maddie is asking for financial assistance to pay for her current treatments, insurance and to help cover the cost of living while she attends the Mayo Clinic. Without help, she will no longer be able to afford her health insurance, infusions and treatments.
Please consider donating and helping Maddie fight stage 4 breast cancer! All donations will be used to pay for Maddie's continued care.
