Help Madeleine fund her Stem Cell Transplant

Hi, My name is Madeline Demers, most of you know me, or the person who forwarded this to you. Four months ago I found out I have MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndrome) A Bone Marrow Disease. It had gone undetected for 3 years, within 2 years my Doctors told me I would have AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) if not treated. The only treatment is Stem Cell Transplant. It was caught early enough though that my body is healthy and strong enough so I'm not going into the transplant process in a weakened condition.

 

I am undergoing 6 cycles of chemotherapy to prepare my bone marrow for transplant before being admitted to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston for Chemotherapy and Transplant. My admission date should be end of March or April. The average length of stay is 10 to 14 days. most of that is chemotherapy. Once the chemo has killed off the sick bone marrow, I will get my infusion of stem cells to grow healthy bone marrow Depending on how I tolerate the transplant, I can be discharged in 2 to 4 days after that.

 

My insurance will not cover everything, even though it is medically necessary. My out of pocket expense such as co-pays for each day in the hospital, co-pays for various providers, co-pays for medicine, transportation costs, and living expenses while I have to stay in Boston for outpatient treatment may run me about $xx,xxx.00. I pray that you will be able to assist me with this burden. No one expects that cancer will strike them, and when it does, no one is actually prepared to face the uncertainty of it all and the high cost of medical care.

 

 

Once I am released from the hospital, it will be necessary for me to stay in a hotel in Boston since I will require follow-up visits 2 - 3 times a week to check the status of the transplant and to make sure my body does not reject it. My oncologist highly recommends I stay in Boston, not just for convenience sake, but to stay safe in my weakened condition. Once the appointments drop to one day a week or every 2 weeks, I should be able to commute with the help of someone driving me. I am sure there are other costs that will spring up, but these are the ones that I know are staring me in the face.
