It is a chronic disease characterized by remission and exacerbations requiring many medications. The disease affects other organ systems as well. It can cause severe abdominal pain, vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea urgency, bloody stools, anemia, arthritis and malnutrition. These symptoms can lead to life threatening complications if immediate and appropriate management is not implemented. There is no cure for this disease, only treatment.
Madison has undergo standard pharamological treatments however, unfortunely has no responded to any treatment thus far. She has required multiple hospitalizations over the past year due to complications secondary to her uncontrolled ulcerative colitis. At this time, due to severity of disease and lack of standard response Madison was recommend to proceed with second opinion at an Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center in NYC. This visit is vial in preventing further invasive treatment including major surgery interventions.
