Help Maile and Zuma Rebuild After Heartbreaking Loss
Donation protected
Maile and Zuma are trying to piece their lives back together after the devastating loss of 9-year-old Kingston, who passed away after a six-year battle with brain cancer. For seven years, Maile was not only Kingston’s mother but also his full-time caregiver, advocating for his needs and fighting for his care every step of the way. Now, she and Zuma are left to navigate a life marked by grief, uncertainty, and significant challenges.
Zuma, just 9 years old, is struggling deeply with the loss of her brother. Her PTSD has made it difficult for her to attend school, and her anxiety has left her afraid to leave her mom’s side. Without the support of family or a stable routine, Maile faces an uphill battle in finding work that allows her to care for Zuma while also covering their most basic expenses.
The challenges are immense. Rent is past due, utilities and car payments are piling up, and the family is at risk of losing the home where Kingston spent his final days. Zuma had to step back from her cheer team, something that brought her joy, because Maile simply can’t afford the costs. Even if Maile were to find a job, the cost of after-school care far exceeds what she can manage, and most available jobs require hours that conflict with Zuma’s needs.
Before becoming Kingston’s caregiver, Maile worked as a paralegal and executive assistant in the entertainment industry, but her seven-year employment gap has made it nearly impossible to get interviews. Despite this, Maile remains a skilled advocate and fundraiser for families like hers, and she dreams of using her experiences to help others. She’s written two children’s books she hopes to self-publish, started a blog to share Kingston’s story, and is working on a podcast to raise awareness and inspire others. However, all of this takes time and resources she doesn’t currently have.
Right now, the immediate priority is keeping a roof over their heads. Their rented home holds not only their belongings but the precious memories of Kingston’s life. Keeping them there a little longer will give Maile and Zuma the chance to grieve without the added burden of homelessness.
This family has endured more heartbreak than anyone should ever have to face, and they deserve the time and space to heal. Your support can make a world of difference, allowing Maile and Zuma to stabilize their lives, honor Kingston’s legacy, and take the steps they need to rebuild. Any contribution—big or small—can help keep them safe, housed, and moving forward. Thank you for considering helping this brave family in their time of need.
