Help make the difference for Semachew!
Malcolm X famously stated: “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” This is true in every sense but for Semachew Ayele Miskir, from Ethiopia, this is even more true. His mother passed away when he was born, he lost his legs because of gangrene at the age of 10. And from that age on lived on his own in the streets. Life has thrown a lot of challenges at him. This only changed several years later when he could stay at New Days Children’s Centre in Bahir Dar. This gave Semachew a new family that supported him and taught him the importance of education.
Years have passed since, and on June 2017 he received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and Hydraulics from Bahir Dar University. Achieving 3rd place out of the 130 students within his department, for his thesis “Designing a drainage highway structure in Bahir Dar and its effects on the ecology of Lake Tana”. Like all his classmates he tried to find a job, but in Ethiopia he would not be considered because of his handicap. Unfortunately, in a lot of countries discrimination solely because of someone’s disability is widespread, even if it is often illegal. In Ethiopia this is still what happens in practice.
To qualify for a job, he was told he should have a master’s degree. So, he decided to do just that. He applied for the MSc course Water Supply Engineering at IHE Delft and got accepted! This means that he will be studying in the Netherlands for 18 months. However, as he comes from outside the EU, and lived in an orphanage, the costs of the study are very high, and he does not have the resources to pay for it himself.
Semachews perseverance and the kindness from good people kept him going and he managed to improve his situation step by step, from living on the streets to getting his BSc, no matter what he faced. However, at one point in our lives we all need to ask for a helping hand to be able to take the next step.
Of course, we will help him as much as possible. Still, on behalf of Semachew we would like to ask you if you can help Semachew achieve a better future by contributing to fund a part of his master studies. Every euro will be a tremendous help in getting him, and with him Ethiopia, along to a brighter future. And in this way your contribution will have a face and you’ll know for sure that the money is spent well!
As Benjamin Franklin said: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
Loads of thanks!
