Help Malique met haar transitie
Donation protected
Dear world
Hi there! My name is Malique. I’m 22 years old and I’m a proud black transgender woman. I’m glad I can finally say this. It took me a while to make the decision to go through medical transitioning. One of the things that held me back was the amount of money it costs, but the gender dysphoria and need to become who I am was too high, so here I am.
But beautiful people, I need help, because I really can’t do this alone. I kept on delaying asking for help, because a part of me is too proud to ask for money from other people, but there’s no other way for this to work.
The surgeries I need to get (orchiectomy, vaginoplasty, breast augmentation) to complete my transition are only partly covered by insurance. I still need to pay €3840 on my own. Besides the surgeries, I’m also getting laser hair removal therapy. To relieve the dysphoria of having facial and chest hair. But also because it’s mandatory to remove hair from the genital area, before getting surgery.
I went to UZ Ghent, to start my laser proces, but was disappointed to find out my skin is too dark to be treated with the lasers available there and because the UZ is a hospital, it was the cheapest option with some coverage by insurance. For me that wasn’t an option anymore, because of the color of my skin… They referred me to an independent aesthetician that is willing to do the laser therapy but the prices are of course higher. Because of my skin color, I’m advised to get 20+ laser sessions per body part, instead of the usual 7-9 sessions. So I’ll be paying more than double the price of a white client. This means, I will be paying roughly €15 000 for my laser procedures.
The lack of medical help and treatments for black people is a result of systemic racism. It’s already so scary to know that I’m literally putting my life in the hands of mostly cis white medical professionals, but to know that some procedures don’t even exist or are twice as expensive for people of color just makes me feel so incredibly marginalised.
The bill for medical transitioning is around 18.840 euros. There is no way in heaven or hell, that I could ever manage to gather this amount of money by myself. Ofcourse I’m trying my absolute best to save money as well. Since I’m still a student, and I also need to pay my own rent, this is something very hard to do. But I try!
I also need to pay for hormones, transportation to hospitals, my hospital stays, the hours of work I lose during recovery, special undergarments, etc etc.
I have loving and caring parents who would give me any last penny they had, but unfortunately, they don’t have money to spare. My mom is fighting Multiple Sclerosis, and is therefore incapable of working. My father has been working as a logistics assistant in a hospital for more than 20 years now. Being the parents of four, it’s already a struggle to come by as it is. They would help if they were able to, but they aren’t.
So here I am, asking you to donate.
Or at least to share this message around, if you are not able to give anything yourself.
You’d literally be saving my life.
