Every donation makes such a huge difference. Maria does this all by herself and the vet and food bills alone are staggering.
Just this week Maria has taken in several emergency cases - a blind cat called Katerina who was living by a dangerous road. She will likely need her eyes removed. Another cat very tragically died this week - he arrived at Maria’s very unwell after having a skin graft for a terrible facial injury. He was very sadly FIV positive and not strong enough to fight off the infection.
Maria has more cats coming in with very serious health issues, because they have nowhere else to go. If she cannot accept these cases, these cats will be put to sleep.
Maria’s Cathouse is mostly a place for cats with special needs - many of them will spend the rest of their lives there. Maria is one of the only rescues in Crete who can accept cats who are FeLV-positive (Feline Leukemia Virus).
These cats have to be strictly isolated from uninfected cats and they have terribly compromised immune systems, so they can get sick very easily and even simple viruses can become life-threatening.
Cats who live with FeLV, need more vet care, high quality diets and will very sadly have a much-reduced life expectancy. All of this means it’s almost impossible they will be adopted.
Your donation means that Maria can treat and feed over 130 cats in her care, as well as emergency foster cases she takes and the many feral colonies she manages.
