Help Mario Save His Beloved Restaurant

Hi my name is Citlalli and I've started a fundraiser to support my dad Mario, owner of Playa del Carmen, a Mexican seafood restaurant in Pasadena, CA. My dad opened this restaurant in Dec of 2019 with the hopes that after decades of working in the service industry as a server, bar back, and cook, he could eventually retire with his life's savings by opening his own restaurant. As an immigrant, he faced many barriers to opening up a brick and mortar, yet he persevered. Unfortunately, we all know what happened in 2020. Not only did my dad invest his whole life's savings to open this restaurant that has been his whole livelihood, he also put his own savings into bringing the restaurant up to code because the landlord refused to do any work to the space. He fell behind on rent during the pandemic at the restaurant but also with his residential landlord and lost his eviction in Dec of 2023. This will be the 3rd eviction my dad will be fighting, the first when he lost our family home in 2017. The commercial landlord for his restaurant served him an eviction letter during the Eaton fires on January 9th, 2025.

With so many fundraisers circulating to support the many families that have lost their homes, I so appreciate any donations for my dad as well who has lost his homes to eviction in the past and now will possibly lose his only source of income, putting his entire livelihood at risk during this time of crisis for LA. My dad is 62 years old, he immigrated from Mexico City to Los Angeles when he was 16 in 1979. In 1986 he volunteered with The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection working on controlled fires in the Shasta mountains. Now almost 40 years later his fish tacos were featured in the 101 best tacos in Los Angeles!

Hola, mi nombre es Citlalli y comencé una recaudación de fondos para apoyar a mi papá Mario, dueño de Playa del Carmen, un restaurante mexicano de mariscos en Pasadena, CA. Mi papá abrió este restaurante en diciembre de 2019 con la esperanza de que después de décadas de trabajar en la industria de servicios como mesero, barista y cocinero, eventualmente podría jubilarse con los ahorros de su vida abriendo su propio restaurante. Como inmigrante, se enfrento a muchas barreras para abrir un local físico, pero lo logro. Desafortunadamente, todos sabemos lo que sucedió en 2020. Mi papá no solo invirtió los ahorros de toda su vida para abrir este restaurante que ha sido su medio de vida, sino que también puso sus propios ahorros en poner el restaurante al codigo porque el propietario se negó a hacer ningún trabajo en el espacio. Se atrasó en el pago del alquiler durante la pandemia en el restaurante, pero también con el propietario de su vivienda y perdió su desalojo en diciembre de 2023. Este será el tercer desalojo contra el que luchará mi padre, el primero cuando perdió la casa de nuestra familia en 2017. El propietario comercial del restaurante le entregó una carta de desalojo durante los incendios de Eaton el 9 de enero de 2025.

Con tantas campañas de recaudación de fondos circulando para apoyar a las muchas familias que han perdido sus hogares, agradezco mucho cualquier donación para mi padre también, quien ha perdido sus hogares por desalojo en el pasado y ahora posiblemente perderá su única fuente de ingresos, poniendo en riesgo todo su sustento durante este tiempo de crisis para Los Ángeles. Mi padre tiene 62 años, emigró de la Ciudad de México a Los Ángeles cuando tenía 16 años en 1979. En 1986 se ofreció como voluntario en el Departamento de Silvicultura y Protección contra Incendios del Departamento de Protección Forestal de los EE.
