Help My Disabled Friend Mark
This is my dear friend, and former boss Mark. If you ate at Allyanna's Pizzeria in Savannah between 2006-2014 you were enjoying delicious pizza under the ownership of Mark. While he had his flaws like we all do, one thing he did not do was leave his employees high and dry. During the 2008 recession many small businesses closed up with no notice or last paycheck to their employees, not Mark. He let everyone he employed eat basically for free, he loaned money when needed, he lectured the hell out of us but its because he saw us as children. Having none of his own, and with his adoptive parents passed away, Mark's family was the people he hired at Allyanna's. I fondly remember slow Sundays where Mark and I would dance, mostly to oldies, while we prepped for the week. Sadly Mark no longer remembers that. At only 55 just over a year ago Mark had a pretty bad stroke. Our co worker and his roommate Jeff called me over Thanksgiving and gave me the news. Luckily I was traveling and was able to stop at the hospital on my way home. Mark had no idea who I was or how he knew me, but he said I was familiar and that helped put him at ease. I listened to the Dr talk about how the stroke affected his brain, how he could no longer see peripherally. I worked in an optical practice, I had made him glasses before, but this loss of vision was something glasses couldn't fix. The Dr said his memory may come back and some of it did, but I had to call his job (he delivered pizza) and tell them he wouldn't be coming back, he could no longer drive. This was in 2019 and his disability still hasn't kicked in. Mark was frugal and always payed his bills, just like he kept the restaurant afloat all those years so I told him I would help if needed but didn't worry too much about him. Plus people were getting stimulus, it was 2020, but he didn't get unemployment. He does have food stamps, but is still fighting for medicaid with medical bills piling up. His out of pocket on his meds is 42.50 per month. I got a call a week ago from Jeff that Mark had had a seizure. I went to visit and discovered the seizure was a result of Mark not taking his meds. When I asked why he wasn't (he had cut out tobacco and alcohol to better his chances of survival, he was on board with getting better although very depressed) he said he was trying to cut costs because the money was running out. That's when I knew something had to be done. So here we are, using America's health care payment system. It's so sad our elected officials just don't care about people like Mark. But I do. He was always good to me, I don't forget that. So here we are. We need $510 for a year of Mark's meds. The other 500 will be just to help ease his mind about bills. In the meantime I will be fighting for a basic income. Thank you so much for any and every contribution.
